Caterpillar Inc.

Product Development Intern

May - August 2018 • Aurora, IL

What I liked

Caterpillar provided many professional development opportunities from networking with senior leaders in the company to special speakers and sessions on resumes, linkedin, sustainability, etc. I also liked the mentor program and the travel to other Caterpillar facilities.

What I wish was different

I wish I would've been given more challenging projects and had less downtime.

Advice

One piece of advice to incoming Caterpillar intern is to make the most of all the professional development opportunities offered, and ask for more projects if it's feeling slow.

Product Development Engineer Intern

May - August 2017 • Peoria, IL

What I liked

Great coworkers, interesting projects, large group of interns to interact with, opportunities to shadow, take on tasks outside of work group and see other parts of the company.

What I wish was different

Onboarding was a bit rough. It took a few weeks to get all access I needed to do my work. Can run out of work if you aren't proactively searching for things to do.

Advice

See as much of the company as you can and talk to as many people as you can. Being proactive and interactive will give you the best and most informative experience.

HR corporate intern

May - August 2018 • Peoria, IL

What I liked

Great projects, company, and culture.

What I wish was different

One project was cancelled and time was wasted, but it wasn’t that big of a deal.

Advice

Often, the best way to learn quickly is to connect with other people, so don’t be afraid to ask questions or ask for help. Also, understand that you’re probably not the only one or the first one to be working on what you’re working on (unless of course you’re at a start up), so seek to understand context: past work, current work, how you fit into the puzzle.

Procurement Intern

May - August 2018 • Peoria, IL

What I liked

I loved that my supervisor allowed me to tell him what I wanted to do, what I was interested in, and then he chose projects that I could do or assist with that he thought would align with my likes and interests.

What I wish was different

I wish Caterpillar had more locations in Michigan, so I could stay closer to home.

Advice

Really get to know the other interns! I lived in Caterpillar's provided housing and met a lot of interns at the mixers thrown by the Greater Peoria Economic Development Council. It was the best way to make friends!
