About the Position:

 

Under the direction of the Branch Chief of Traffic Signs and Safety Devices, a Senior Transportation Engineer (Supervisor), the incumbent, a Transportation Engineer (Civil) serves as the Traffic Signs Engineer in the Traffic Sign and Safety Devices Branch. The incumbent is responsible for supporting various professional engineering tasks related to traffic signs, addresses inquiries from different stakeholders, and assists the Senior Transportation Engineer in developing, maintaining, and revising the California Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (CAMUTCD) and the California Numbered Exit Uniform System to ensure the uniform application of signs throughout California. The incumbent supports the Division of Safety Programs and districts to utilize safety systems and devices to implement a Safe System approach on the State Highway System as well as providing uniform standards for regional partners and local roads to help California meet its Strategic Highway Safety Program and Highway Safety Improvement Program goals. The Safe System approach aims to eliminate fatal and serious injuries for all road users. It does so through a holistic view of the road system that first anticipates human mistakes and second keeps impact energy on the human body at tolerable levels.
