Position Overview

The Division of Mental Health is seeking to hire a licensed Registered Nurse to serve as Assistant Director of Nursing and to oversee and supervise professional and paraprofessional nursing staff in the care and treatment of psychiatric patients at the Chicago-Read Mental Health Center located in Chicago, Illinois.  At Chicago-Read Mental Health Center, we treat individuals with dignity and compassion.  Our mission is to provide recovery-oriented, evidence-based, psychiatric healthcare services, within a safe environment, which promote quality of life and full participation in the community.

Essential Functions

  • Serves as Assistant Director of Nursing in conformance with established professional nursing practices and standards for the Chicago-Read Mental Health Center.
  • Serves as full-line supervisor.
  • Participates in developing nursing care policies and procedures.
  • Participates in reviewing aggregate data collection to meet The Joint Commission and CMS standards of compliance.
  • Participates in hospital-wide committees to improve quality of patient care.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Illinois.
  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of college with coursework in nursing.
  • Requires prior experience equivalent to three (3) years of progressively responsible professional nursing experience in a public or business organization.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing.
  • Three (3) years of professional experience in a hospital setting providing direct care or oversight to patients with mental illness in a mental health unit/setting.
  • Three (3) years of professional experience in a nursing setting, including staff scheduling, performance evaluations, approving leave, applying discipline in accordance with union agreements and guiding nursing staff.
  • Three (3) years of professional experience developing, implementing and evaluating nursing policies and procedures aligned with current standards of psychiatric nursing care.
  • Three (3) years of professional experience managing patient flow logistics, including oversight of admissions, discharges and coordination of treatment plans within a psychiatric facility.
  • Three (3) years of professional experience delivering training and conducting quality assurance for reviews for nursing staff, while maintaining effective communication with internal and external stakeholders related to psychiatric patient care.

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires ability to pass the IDHS background check.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen for drugs prohibited from recreational use under Illinois Law.
  • Requires ability to serve on-call on a rotating basis, after hours, weekend and holidays.
