The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) is seeking applications for candidates for the position of Engineer Trainee Transportation (ETT). The Division of Capital Program Management (CPM) delivers a wide range of world - class transportation projects through the planning, design, and construction phases. It utilizes and continually improves systems designed to deliver project on time and within budget. CPM takes pride in its highly skilled professionals that deliver capital projects worth hundreds of millions of dollars each year. Staff are encouraged to participate in various professional
development opportunities offered throughout the year, including regional/national conferences and in - house mentoring sessions.
 

CPM staff have a wide range of responsibilities, including but not limited to:
• Ensuring project designs and construction plans comply with a diverse set of federal and state regulations and policies that focus on safety, the environment, property acquisition, utility relocations, and construction materials.
• Assessing and improving internal processes and information reporting and management systems.
• Collaborating with subject matter experts throughout the department.
 

CPM has a staff of over 1,300 men and women with offices located at the Headquarters Complex, Regional Offices, and at numerous temporary construction field offices throughout the State.
 

Vacancies are available within the following divisions/bureaus:
 

Construction and Materials
The division consists of Regional District Offices - North Region, Central Region, and South Region, the Bureau of Construction Management, the Bureau of Materials, and the Office of Maritime Resources.


Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Administration of all project construction contracts in the capital program.
• Inspection of materials and quality of work.
• Assurance all safety and environmental protection measures are in place.
• Field work as assigned.
 

Highway Design
The division is compromised of the Bureau of Pavement & Drainage Management & Technology, the Bureau of Roadway Design Group 1, and the Bureau of Roadway Design Group 2.
 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Management of pavement, guiderail, and drainage assets.
• Coordination and prioritization of rehabilitation projects.
• Preparation of in - house roadway project designs.
• Provide technical support for all pavement projects.
• Field work as assigned.

Traffic Engineering
The division is compromised of the Bureau of Traffic Engineering North, Bureau of Traffic Engineering Central, Bureau of Traffic Engineering South, and Bureau of Traffic Engineering  Regulations & Electrical Engineering.
 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Review and approval of temporary and permanent traffic signals, signal timings, pavement markings,
signs, and highway lighting.
• Preparation of traffic regulation orders pertaining to speed limits, passing zones, etc.
• Perform traffic engineering studies.
• Preparation of work orders for simple fixes to be carried out by the division of Operations.
• Field work as assigned.
 

Bridge Engineering and Infrastructure Management 

The division includes the Bureau of Structural Evaluation and Bridge Management, Bureau of Structural Engineering Services, and Bureau of Structural Design and Geotechnical Engineering.
 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Inspection of all bridges and other structures.
• Provides recommendations for rehabilitation or replacement.
• Review all designs for bridge projects.
• Develop design policies and in - house structural designs.
• Approve geotechnical engineering designs.
• Maintain the Rockfall Hazard Management System.
• Field work as assigned.
 

Project Management
 

The division consists of four (4) teams. Each team is assigned to a geographic region but will report to the NJDOT Headquarters in Ewing.
 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Organize, oversee, and implement the delivery of capital program projects.
• Manage projects through preliminary engineering, final design phases, and construction.
• Field visits as assigned.
 

Right of Way and Access Management
This division includes the Bureau of Right of Way & Access Management, Bureau of Technical Support, Bureau of Closing, and two (2) Regional District Offices.
 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Acquisition of real estate for transportation purposes.
• Regulation of all driveways abutting state highways.
 

WORK SCHEDULE AND SALARY
Engineer Trainees (Civil) are assigned a 40 - hour workweek. Current starting salary is $66,510.14 and $69,074.87 after six (6) months. Standard workweek is Monday through Friday, but some positions may require contractor work hours. 

Work experience within many of the units will qualify as approved Design Experience for the issuance of a New Jersey PE License.

REQUIREMENTS
Degree: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering.


Note: Possession of a valid Professional Engineer's License issued by the New Jersey State Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors may be substituted for the Bachelor's degree in Engineering.
Note: An Engineer - In - Training (EIT) certification issued by the Division of Consumer Affairs, New Jersey Office of the Attorney General may be substituted for the above education requirement. Applicants must submit proof of the EIT certification and the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam results. The area of discipline indicated on the FE exam results (e.g., Civil, Electrical and Computers, Chemical, Industrial and Systems, Environmental, Mechanical, and Other Disciplines) must be appropriate to the position.

License: Appointee will be required to possess a Driver's License valid in New Jersey.
