Position Purpose:

The Assistant Teacher supports the Lead Teacher in providing a safe, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate environment for children. This role involves assisting with daily care routines, engaging in learning activities, maintaining a clean and organized classroom, and supporting the emotional and developmental needs of each child.

Daily Duties and Responsibilities:

Health, Safety & Supervision

  • Maintain constant supervision of children during all activities, ensuring safety at all times.
  • Assist with daily health checks upon arrival and report any concerns to the Lead Teacher.
  • Follow all diapering and toileting procedures in accordance with licensing and center policies.
  • Help sanitize toys, equipment, and surfaces daily (or as needed throughout the day).
  • Follow all state licensing regulations, safety standards, and emergency procedures.
  • In the absence of the Lead Teacher, the Assistant Teacher will assume the responsibilities of the lead role to ensure the classroom continues to operate smoothly and in compliance with all center policies and licensing regulations. 

Development & Learning

  • Engage children in developmentally appropriate activities designed by the Lead Teacher to promote motor, language, sensory, and social development.
  • Use nurturing, respectful communication and encourage secure attachments.
  • Support activity modifications based on individual developmental stages.

Documentation & Communication

  • Assist in completing daily reports for each child (feeding, diapering, sleep, activities, mood, etc.) using Brightwheel.
  • Share developmental observations with the Lead Teacher.
  • Maintain professional and respectful communication with parents and families during drop-off/pick-up.
  • Report concerns regarding development, behavior, or health to the Lead Teacher or Director.

Classroom Environment

  • Help set up and maintain a clean, organized, and engaging classroom environment.
  • Support the regular rotation of toys and learning materials.
  • Help maintain a calm and consistent classroom atmosphere through routines and tone.
  • Offer emotional support through cuddling, soothing, singing, and consistent caregiving practices.

Team Collaboration

  • Work cooperatively with the Lead Teacher and other team members to ensure smooth classroom operation.
  • Attend staff meetings, training sessions, and professional development as scheduled.
  • Support and communicate with coworkers and leadership about classroom needs or concerns.
  • Offer guidance to floaters or substitutes as needed, based on classroom routines.

General Expectations:

  • Arrive on time and follow the assigned schedule.
  • Wear appropriate, professional attire (per the staff dress code).
  • Use respectful language and maintain a positive attitude in all interactions.
  • Follow all center policies, procedures, and licensing requirements.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and a team-oriented mindset.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all child and family information.
  • Work hours are subject to change at the discretion of leadership in order to meet the needs of the center and the families we serve. Flexibility in scheduling is expected and appreciated as we work together to maintain consistent, high-quality care.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift/carry children up to 30 pounds.
  • Able to bend, kneel, sit on the floor, and stand for extended periods.
  • Must be able to respond quickly to emergencies and changes in a child’s behavior.
  • Participate in both indoor and outdoor activities as part of the daily schedule.

Qualifications:

Required Education

  • High School Diploma or GED.

Preferred Education

  • Enrollment in or completion of Early Childhood Education or Child Development coursework.

Required Experience

  • At least 2 years of experience working in a licensed child care center with children.

Certifications:

  • Current CPR and Pediatric First Aid Certification (or ability to obtain upon hire).
  • Completion of state-required health and safety training.
  • Required to obtain and provide all necessary background clearances, including but not limited to criminal history, child abuse, and FBI fingerprint clearances, prior to employment.

  • Ability to maintain professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Willingness to follow direction from the Lead Teacher, Closing Shift Supervisor, and Directors.

To support this, you may be asked to temporarily move to another classroom. When doing so, you are expected to assume the responsibilities of that classroom and support the teaching team as needed to ensure continuity of care and supervision.
