Summer Camp Counselor at Outdoor Adventure and Mythology Day Camp

Title: Camp Counselor 
Employment Status: Exempt/Seasonal  
Reports to: Camp Director 
Summary: 
Plato Learning operates outdoor mythology-based day camps for kids ages 7-15. They create a world where monsters, myth, and magic transport kids out of the mortal realm into one where they are empowered to develop new skills, take risks, solve problems, and ultimately become Heroes. Now in ten locations spanning from NYC to California, Plato Learning uses actors, live-action role-play, and physically and mentally engaging activities to bring myths to life. We are seeking to hire energetic and creative leaders to serve as Camp Counselors at all camp locations, including Manhattan, NY; Brooklyn, NY; Staten Island, NY; West Orange, NJ; Washington, D.C.; Richmond, VA; Philadelphia, PA; Glendale, CA; Los Angeles, CA; and San Francisco, CA. Counselors are responsible for leading a cabin of 7-15 year-old camper demigods on their weekly camp journey through the wild, magical world of mythology, and for developing them into the heroes they were destined to become.

Candidates must be able to work full-time during the summer season. All counselors are required to participate in an online and in-person training prior to the start of camp. This is a recurring summer position perfect for current college students and high school graduates. This is a temporary, seasonal position and does not include benefits or paid leave.  

COVID NOTICE: Our COVID-19 Policies and Procedures will be updated periodically to reflect all mandated state and federal health & safety regulations. All camps will operate in-person in 2021. 

Schedule:  
  • Virtual Training May 24-28
  • In-Person Training 1 week before Camp Season Starts (varies by location)
  • Full-time during Camp Season (varies by location)

Responsibilities:
  •  Facilitate a cabin – a group of 8-12 campers 
  • Ensure children's safety, manage children's behavior, and model constructive participation in all daily activities
  • Teach elective classes (specialty class) multiple times each week 
  • Act as a role model and mentor for campers and staff by modeling constructive participation in all daily activities 
  • Work directly with camp staff to actively engage with storytelling and character building with campers; act as a guide for assigned cabin on weekly adventures
  • Engage in role play, and perform in character as needed during each guided adventure  
  • Work closely with Camp Director to ensure the safety of all children
  • Facilitate camper check-in and check-out, and communicate effectively and professionally with parents
  • Support with morning camp set-up as needed
  • Participate in online and in-person training sessions before camp begins
  • Report directly to Camp Director during the camp season and collaborate with Assistant Director

  • Comply with Plato Learning’s procedures and applicable state and federal policies and procedures  
  • Frequent sitting, standing, walking, running, kneeling outdoors 

Qualifications: 
  • At least 18 years old
  • At least 2 years of experience working with kids in a camp or equivalent educational setting
  • A high school graduate or GED by the start of work 
  • Completed 1 year of college or equivalent professional experience preferred 
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in a camp or educational setting
  • Interest and skills in one or more of the following: literature, literacy, drama, theater arts, storytelling, music, visual arts, science & nature studies, fencing, combat, martial arts
  • Knowledge and passion for Storytelling & Mythology is a MUST 
  • Must have read at least one book in the Percy Jackson series; additional knowledge/interest in the Rick Riordan literary universe is a highly valued
  • CPR/First Aid certified- trained (recertification will be provided if current certification expires before Summer 2021)
  • Pass Federal Background Checks
