Position Summary:
The Office of Institutional Analysis (OIA) at the University at Buffalo is seeking an Assistant for Institutional Research, reporting to the Assistant Vice President for University Reporting and Senior Data Architect, to join our collaborative information team. OIA ultimately serves all offices and departments of the university as well as a wide range of external audiences. The Assistant for Institutional Research supports tactical and strategic planning by senior university officials and academic unit decision makers the collection and analysis of both quantitative and qualitative information about the institution, its students, its faculty, its programs, its publics, its practices and its services. This work involves the development of accurate, comprehensive, and trusted information products to support policy formulation, institutional reporting, and university assessment activities. In this respect, the ideal candidate will have a passion for discovering information hidden in large data sets and working with stakeholders to improve their institutional outcomes. Moreover, the candidate must also possess a proactive nature and have the ability to work independently to meet OIA objectives with minimal direction from office leadership.

The Office of Institutional Analysis (OIA) has the primary institutional responsibility for the collection and analysis of quantitative and qualitative information on the institution, its students, its faculty, its programs, its publics, its practices and its services. The office provides analytic support for the planning, evaluation and policy initiatives of the provost and senior leadership and acts as the institution’s reporting agent.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree with two years’ experience outside the classroom in the collection and analysis of institutional data to support data-driven decision-making.

Preferred Qualifications:
Institutional research, assessment, effectiveness or data analytics including:
• Capture, analysis, and draft presentation of information in support of institutional or departmental research efforts, and the rapid creation of ad-hoc queries utilizing modern desktop database tools to further support wide-ranging user inquiry.
• Ability to artfully extract, manipulate and present information using the Microsoft suite of Office tools or similar products with the ability to effectively summarize and present information to customers ranging from departmental functional staff to individual senior administrators.
• Strong organizational, communication, and time management skills; the attention to detail, ability to work independently, as well as the ability to be productive and creative working with a diverse OIA team, and the ability to maintain effective working relationships with personnel from outside OIA and the ability to anticipate needs and to prioritize multiple tasks are critical.
• Demonstrated skills specific to providing creative information solutions within a complex, deadline-driven office or work environment.
• Experience with the manipulation of very large data sets, with a strong understanding of relational database concepts and possess previous experience mining, transforming, and analyzing such data to create actionable intelligence products, preferably in an environment supporting policy formulation, assessment, and/or institutional operations.
• Ability to utilize large data sets to find opportunities for process optimization as well as models to assess the efficacy of a particular policy.•
• Specific experience using database and visualization tools such as Access, SQL Server, OBIEE, SPSS, SAS, or Tableau.
• Previous central office or academic unit experience manipulating university data, assisting with the development of actionable policy, or assessing institutional success would be a definite plus.
