Environmental Protection Engineer I (46-14-21)


Under the direct supervision of the Non-Municipal Sub-Unit Manager, Non-Municipal Unit, Permit Section, Division of Water Pollution Control, Bureau of Water, assists higher level staff to gain knowledge and training in performing a variety of routine engineering functions as necessary to support non-municipal wastewater permitting programs; review of permit applications for the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) program for a variety of non-municipal facilities such as industrial facilities, coal mines, non-coal mines, Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFO’s) and related stormwater discharges, and the Publicly Owned Treatment Works (POTW) Pretreatment program; review of permit applications for the State construction and operating permit program for operations such as industrial treatment or pretreatment, land application of sludge, spray irrigation, and Subtitle D mine permits; review and issuance of 401 water quality certifications and related Lake Michigan determinations; agricultural chemical facility endorsements; industrial treatment plant operator certifications; and property tax certifications.   Participates and observes higher level staff in meetings, public hearings, and/or discussions with applicants, consulting engineers, other Agency staff, USEPA staff, the U.S Army Corps of Engineers, other State and Federal Agencies or the public; assists in conducting reviews of applications for certification of industrial wastewater treatment plant operators. Travels in performance of duties.
