L&I Industrial Hygienist 4, Education & Outreach Program

Our Division of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) administers the State of Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act, operating under agreement with Federal OSHA, and serves state citizens by protecting the safety and health of Washington's workforce. As an Industrial Hygienist 4 (IH4) within the Education and Outreach Services Program, you will provide field consultation and outreach related to industrial hygiene, emergency response, process safety management, ergonomics, and Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) workplace safety and health practices to employers and small business associations.

Duties
Some of what you'll be doing in this role includes:
  • Conduct industrial hygiene reviews, surveys, and assessments at workplaces.
  • Provides industrial hygiene assistance to employers in the preparation, development, and implementation of basic safety and health programs.
  • Verify voluntary compliance with occupational health regulations at employer worksites.
  • Evaluate industrial hygiene programs, PPE assessments, medical surveillance program at worksites.
  • Coordinate and participate in PSM and ergonomic assessments at VPP worksites.
  • Participate on DOSH VPP quality assurance audits to evaluate worksite for occupational health.
  • Review and coordinate industrial hygiene assessments and surveys completed by DOSH consultants.
  • Provide technical expertise on industrial hygiene programs, emergency response, process, safety management, and ergonomics.
  • Ensure that application reviews, onsite assessments, and approvals are in accordance with DOSH policies and procedures for VPP.
  • Conduct presentations and training on VPP to employers, small business associations, VPP participants, and employer groups.
  • Partner with WA businesses to promote safety culture in their workplaces. 
Qualifications
Required:
  • Five (5) years of experience as a DOSH Industrial Hygienist, of which two (2) years must be at the IH3 level.
OR
  • Bachelor's degree in occupational safety and/or health, industrial hygiene, chemistry, physics, chemical, mechanical or sanitary engineering, environmental science, nursing, medicine, biology or related field.
AND
  • Five (5) years of experience as an industrial hygienist or environmental professional, in the field, or in governmental enforcement, or program implementation activities of industrial hygiene programs.
AND
  • Three (3) years of experience as an industrial hygienist or equivalent.
Please Note: A Master's degree in industrial hygiene or related field can be substituted for one year of industrial hygiene or related field experience.
