Research Associate – Assay Development

We have an exciting opportunity for an Innovative Research Associate – Assay Development within our Abbott Rapid Diagnostics business located at Carlsbad, CA. In this role, you will help expand test content on the ID NOW™ platform by designing, screening and optimizing novel assays as well as engaging in research activities focused on expanding the capabilities of the core technology. Now is an exciting time to join!

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Design, develop and optimize iNAT assays, from initial screening through validation on clinical samples
  • Perform research related to improving and expanding core technology capabilities
  • Optimize sample preparation coupled to the iNAT’s core technology
  • Optimize detection approaches coupled to the iNAT’s core technology
  • Analyze experimental results and provide written reports and oral presentations to executives
  • Demonstrate technical proficiency in molecular techniques
  • Provide product support when necessary
  • Investigate problem areas and areas of desirable product improvement
  • Works with multidisciplinary team with other scientists, researchers and technicians.

 
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • B.S. in Molecular Biology/Biochemistry, or a closely related field with a minimum of one year of molecular laboratory experience
  • Hands-on nucleic acid amplification and detection technologies experience
  • Experience with nucleic acid sample preparation methods, including rapid technologies
  • Work with clinical samples using molecular diagnostic technologies
  • Inventive, with ability to implement ideas in the laboratory
  • Ability to work as part of a team with excellent communication skills
  • Problem-solving skills combined with analytical skills and good attention to detail
 
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • M.S. in Biology, Biochemistry or Chemistry, or related technical field
  • Experience working under design control and developing human in vitro diagnostic tests for commercialization in the U.S and OUS is a plus
 
COMPETENCIES:
  • Comprehension of scientific literature and terminology
  • Practical laboratory skills
  • Ability in mathematics and computer literacy
  • Good communication skills, capable of communicating ideas to colleagues and customers
  • Problem –solving skills and good organizational skills
  • Understanding of the commercial value of their work
  • Firm knowledge of science and the ability to apply basic principles and techniques.
