STAR PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Sustaining Technical and Analytic Resources (STAR) is a project of the Public Health Institute (PHI) supported by the US Agency for International Development (USAID) Global Health (GH) Bureau. Its purpose is twofold: (1) Through individual fellowships, STAR will help strengthen the capacity of diverse American and low-and-middle-income country (LMIC) health professionals at all levels to make innovative contributions to global health (GH); and (2) STAR will create ground-breaking opportunities for both US and LMIC GH academic institutions and other groups, including professional associations, to create systems for open-access knowledge sharing, resulting in effective partnerships. STAR’s individual and institutional participants are contributing to the development of self-sustaining systems and tools that will produce global citizens with the full spectrum of relevant health competencies. STAR is managed by the Public Health Institute and implemented in partnership with Johns Hopkins University (JHU), the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), and the Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH).
 
INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION
Background:
The High Impact Practices (HIPs) for Family Planning Partnership is led by five Co-Sponsors: USAID, International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF), World Health Organization/Implementing Best Practice Initiative (WHO/IBP), Family Planning 2020 (FP2020), and United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). The purpose of the partnership is to advance the HIPs as a public good that focus resources for the greatest impact. HIPs are a set of evidence-based family planning practices vetted by experts against specific criteria and documented in an easy-to-use format.
 
Introduction:
This High Impact Practices (HIP) for Family Planning Internship (Intern) will support the development of a HIP orientation package which is critical as the partnership broadens engagement across HIP development, implementation, and dissemination. The Intern will also be responsible for developing a knowledge management and dissemination product for each of the 20 HIPs in the form of a slide deck. This position will work closely with a member of the IBP Network who serves as a Senior Technical Advisor, and the HIP team within the Office of Population and Reproductive Health at USAID.
Reporting structure:
The Intern will work closely with the HIP Production and Dissemination Team and receive technical guidance from the Senior Implementation Sciences Technical Advisor of the Office of Population and Reproductive Health.
 
OUTCOMES
 By the end of the internship, the Intern will have gained experience and exposure to:
  • High Impact Practices in Family Planning and the evidence that supports these practices.
  • Key stakeholders of the family planning and reproductive health community.
  • Best practices in knowledge management and dissemination through the development of synthesis documents.
 
Essential Duties:
  • Develop a slide deck as a derivative product (a product that is derived from an existing technical product) for each of the 20 existing HIP briefs in English and in an additional HIP language for use by country-level decision-makers.
  • Coordinate the review, revision and finalization process with diverse stakeholders.
  • Coordinate field testing of selected slide decks with stakeholders in the field as required.
  • Develop orientation package(s) for the HIP Partnership.
  • Develop infographics to explain various HIP Partnership processes for development, translation, and dissemination of HIPs.
  • Additional tasks as the processes to keep the HIPs up-to-date evolve.
 
Anticipated learning outcomes:
All STAR Interns will participate in learning activities (*required 10% time) during their internship. By the end of the internship, the Intern will be able to:
  • Identify and describe the core attributes of the STAR global health competencies; defined as development practice, cross cultural awareness, communication, capacity strengthening, ethics of public health, health equity, gender equality and global burden of disease.
  • Gain exposure to Knowledge Management and Research Utilization and Family Planning through global health programming.
  • Apply effective communication skills across a broad network of peers and advisors within global health to support learning and professional development.
  • Develop a global health focused career plan with a mentor.
 
INTERNSHIP REQUIREMENTS
Required:
  • Currently enrolled masters or other post-bachelor’s degree candidate in public health, international development or a related field; or completion of such within the past 12 months.
  • Demonstrated experience in the development of communication materials.
  • Demonstrated proficiency using Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.
  • Self-motivated and able to independently manage a project and adhere to deadlines.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Fluency in one of the HIP languages (French, Spanish or Portuguese)
  • US citizenship or US permanent residency required.
 
Additional skills (preferred):
  • Basic understanding of international family planning community including donors, policymakers, researchers and implementing organizations.
  • Previous experience in dissemination within international development.
