Software Engineering Internship

Naval Medical Research Unit Dayton conducts research on environmental health effects and aerospace medicine, addressing health and performance challenges faced by service members in operational military environments.

The selected participant will gain hands-on experience through activities/projects in support of the vestibular research lab at NAMRU-Dayton and associated labs at The Ohio State University. The intent is to complement a participant's education with real-time programming experience for DoD research. Under the guidance of a mentor, a participant would be involved in programming for projects relating to the study of postural control (i.e. balance), vestibular thresholds, and their relation to 1) extreme environments (e.g. hyper-gravity and hypoxia), and 2) induced sensory illusions. Such studies would be conducted in healthy control, vestibular-deficient, concussed, and potentially other populations. Additional opportunities to model human responses and/or cybernetic (e.g. operator-in-the-loop) systems are available. This opportunity provides hands-on, educational experience with various programming technologies, including but not limited to Pascal, C++, MATLAB, and Delphi. The participant will also have the opportunity to collaborate on data analysis and potentially even to contribute to manuscript and grant preparation, and learn about DoD collaborations with Air Force, Army, and University colleagues.

Appointment Length
This ORISE appointment is for a 12-month period.  Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

Desired start date: 5/03/2021

Participant Benefits
Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by NAMRU-D. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

  • Health Insurance Supplement. Participants are eligible to purchase health insurance through ORISE.
  • Relocation Allowance
  • Training and Travel Allowance

Nature of Appointment
The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.

Qualifications
Degree acquired in a STEM area is required along with both interest and experience programming computer software. Applicants with experience programming for embedded/real-time applications and/or instrument control will be given preference. Applicants should be able to demonstrate (via passed classes or documented via references) programming proficiency in at least two programming languages. Experience programming in any of the following – C++, Delphi/Pascal, MATLAB, Labview – highly desired. All programming experience would be seen as contributing to a positive skill set that would be expected to contribute to a successful hands-on experience.
