The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Rights Program of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking a Coordinator to provide administrative and fundraising assistance to the team. The position reports to the Director of the LGBT Rights Program, based in New York, and supports other staff in the LGBT Rights Program. The LGBT Rights Program is a division of the Program Office which oversees the organization’s research and reporting work. The LGBT Rights Program documents and exposes abuses based on sexual orientation and gender identity worldwide – including torture, killing and executions, arrests under unjust laws, unequal treatment, censorship, medical abuses, discrimination in health and jobs and housing, domestic violence, abuses against children, and denial of family rights and recognition.

Due to COVID-19, many of our global offices are currently closed or operating in reduced capacities. The successful candidate may be required to work remotely initially or if local requirements mandate it. We recognize that this moment, during the pandemic, is a uniquely difficult time for most people, particularly those with caregiving responsibilities, and we aim to be as flexible and supportive as possible in both the recruitment for and onboarding of this position. The position may initially be temporarily based elsewhere in the United States until our offices fully reopen, so long as candidates are willing to work eastern timezone working hours. 

Responsibilities:

1. Providing administrative support such as scheduling, making travel arrangements, taking minutes at meetings, creating and maintaining extensive filing and archiving systems, and processing departmental finances and payments;

2. Maintaining communication among HRW offices, global staff, and external partners, and shepherding LGBT Rights Program publications through the internal review process; 

3. Preparing, editing, formatting and/or distributing materials such as news releases, advocacy letters, reports, briefing papers, op eds, publications, agendas, and web content;

4. Managing a network of 100 donors to the LGBT Rights Program, including
a. Updating the database of LGBT donors; 
b. Managing relationships with prospective donors;
c. Drafting newsletters, mailings, and other written communications to keep donors and prospects updated on the program’s work;
d. Working with Development colleagues to plan special events for donors; and
e. Tracking and acknowledging donations and donor communications.

5. Assisting with events such as news conferences, staff meetings, and special events; 

6. Responding to requests for information and providing urgent assistance in crisis situations when necessary;

7. Providing limited background research assistance and monitoring media coverage of HRW research and advocacy; attending advocacy meetings or briefings and liaising with affiliated organizations and international entities; 

8. Recruiting, onboarding, and assisting with the supervision of interns, and assisting with recruiting and hiring of other staff, as needed; and

9. Carrying out other duties as required.

Qualifications: 

Education: A bachelor’s degree in human rights, international relations, social sciences, or a related field is required. 

Experience: A minimum of two years of relevant work experience is required.

Related Skills and Knowledge:  

1. Prior office/administration experience and strong organizational skills with meticulous attention to detail are required. 
2. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are required; proficiency in other languages is desirable.
3. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well under pressure while juggling multiple tasks simultaneously are required. 
4. Ability to make sound decisions consistent with functions is required.
5. Self-motivation and the ability to prioritize with minimal supervision and work independently as well as function as a member of a team are required.
6. Proficiency in computer packages including MS Office applications is required.
7. Experience in fundraising and event-planning is preferred.
8. Strong interest in international human rights is preferred. 

Salary and Benefits: Salary range starts at $52,513 Human Rights Watch offers comprehensive employer-paid benefits, including medical, dental, vision, disability and life insurance, an outstanding retirement savings plan and twenty (20) days of vacation per year.
