Position Title: Outdoor Recreation Planner (GS 0023)

Internship Overview
Department of Interior’s (DOI) Bureau of Land Management (BLM) will host a minimum of 11-weeks of full-time summer internships. The internships will be an opportunity to bring new and diverse viewpoints to the BLM while working on specific projects targeted for attracting, recruiting, and filling mission critical and hard-to-fill occupations. Position Overview
Increasing access to outdoor recreation opportunities on our nation’s public lands is a top priority for the Department of the Interior (DOI). Activities like mountain biking, climbing, kayaking, fishing, and hiking provide physical and mental health benefits and allow Americans to more fully experience beautiful public lands and waterways. Outdoor Recreation Planners are an important part of the DOI team supporting the public’s enjoyment of land, water, and related resources for leisure use, while protecting and enhancing the quality of the environment.

Description/Responsibilities:
The ideal candidate has a broad knowledge base that combines understanding of outdoor recreation, natural resource conservation, sociology, land management, community or regional planning, forestry, biology and other scientific fields. This person is able to analyze, plan and evaluate, and to educate and collaborate effectively with a variety of people.
 
Work may be performed in both an office setting and in the field for activities such as trail building, visitor facility maintenance, or data collection.

  • Gathering information for inventories of recreation resources
  • Consolidating and displaying data used in resources planning and reports
  • Reviewing project proposals that may impact recreational areas or activities
  • Developing or collecting data and conducting analyses (such as geospatial information)
  • Constructing or maintaining visitor facilities and recreation infrastructure

Eligibility:
§ Preferred majors: Biological Sciences, Environmental Science, Ecology, Natural Resource Management, Wilderness, Outdoor Recreation Sociology, Forestry, Landscape Architecture, Economics, Park Administration, Earth Science, Civil Engineering, Urban Planning, or Recreation, other related majors
§ Valid state issued driver’s license required
§ U.S. Citizenship or Green Card Holder required
§ Experience with GIS, programing (Python), and research skills required
§ Nearing completion of a minor or certificate should suffice for both GIS and programing (Python) experience, both will be needed
§ Understand research principles, experience following protocols

  1. Currently enrolled as a Undergraduate, Graduate Student or Recent Graduate (on or after December 2020)

  3. Transcript (official or unofficial)
  4. Minimum GPA - 2.50
