Job Description
The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL)'s Building & Connected Systems (BCS) group performs applied research that drives energy and water efficiency, occupant productivity, and resilient operation of buildings and connected systems to provide economic, environmental, security, and societal benefits to the nation. The group is comprised of about 75 research engineers, scientists, and program managers with diverse expertise in building mechanical systems, HVAC controls, data science and computer science. The group's core capabilities include building energy simulation, building energy and water performance evaluation and technology validation, building controls optimization and networking, miscellaneous energy loads, and building data analytics.

The BCS Group is seeking a Post Master's Research Associate to support its research into building energy and water efficiency. This candidate will contribute to a variety of tasks including measurement and evaluation of consumer electronics; site/campus assessments of building energy and water systems and associated site infrastructure; use of whole-building modeling and other tools to analyze building performance; lifecycle-cost analysis of building retrofit measures; and identification of solutions to improve equipment performance. The candidate will also support the development and demonstration of new technologies, tools, and assessment methods that enable more efficient building performance.

The expected term will be 1 year for position, at which point the candidate will be reviewed for potential conversation to a full-time employee.

Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must have received a Master’s degree within the past 24 months or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university. Minimum overall GPA of 3.0 required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Building Sciences or related field
  • Knowledgeable in power management, measurement and estimation, and power conversion.
  • Knowledgeable of building HVAC equipment and systems.
  • Practical experience conducting building energy evaluations or audits, and using building energy modeling (e.g. eQUEST, Energy Plus, FEDS) or other analysis tools.
  • Programming skills (e.g. Python, R, Ruby)
  • A passion for learning and innovation, and a desire to advance the building sciences domain through improvements in energy and water efficiency.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical information effectively to technical and nontechnical audiences.
  • A collaborative approach to problem-solving and the ability to work well with inter-disciplinary and geographically distributed teams.
