Position: Research Associate I/II – Strain Analytics Sequencing Core, Berkeley, CA 
We are seeking a detail-oriented Research Associate with NGS experience to join our Strain Analytics Sequencing Core group. In this role you will work closely with collaborators from multiple teams as part of a research pipeline that provides a wide range of NGS services to our R&D and Commercial programs.  We are looking for someone who is energized to solve creatively and excited to tackle a key agricultural challenge in a fast paced and supportive environment. Must be able to work independently and as a part of a dynamic team. 

 Responsibilities: 
  • NGS library synthesis (often performed on liquid handling robots) followed by sequencing on various platforms to study bacteria, soil microbiome, and plant samples. 
  • Optimize and develop various WGS, Amplicon-Seq, and RNA-Seq methods. 
  • DNA/RNA extractions, qPCR/RT-qPCR 
  • Provide quantitative data on key bacterial growth metrics (growth, viability, activity, establishment on plant tissues) 
  • New assay development and assisting with process automation. 
  • This is a wet-lab focused position for running routine assays as well as ample opportunity for method development. 

  Qualifications and Experience: 
  • BS in microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, or other biological science with 2-5 years of full-time laboratory experience, MS with 0-2 years of full-time laboratory experience, or equivalent experience 
  • Experience developing and/or troubleshooting NGS Library Synthesis Methods Required 
  • Experience with Bash required 
  • Comfortable with standard molecular biology techniques including DNA/RNA extraction/QC/Quantification, PCR optimization, Sterile Technique 
  • Strong experience with NGS Library Synthesis and Sequencing Required, Illumina preferred 
  • Experience with liquid handling robots, qPCR/RT-qPCR, and LIMS Desired 
  • Experience with NGS data analysis in R or Python a plus 
  • Very strong verbal and written communication skills 
  • Experience mentoring and/or training other researchers 
  • Data organization and reporting with Microsoft Suite/Sharepoint, LIMS, Asana, or similar
