Who We Are  
Baltimore City Teaching Residency (BCTR) prepares individuals without teaching certification to become exceptional teachers for Baltimore students. BCTR Residents play a critical role in breaking down the socioeconomic and racial barriers that have denied our students access to an equitable education. Through Baltimore City Teaching Residency (BCTR), you will elevate your academic and professional expertise into a high-impact career as a certified K-12 teacher working in Baltimore City Public Schools. 
 
Who Our Students Need 
Baltimore City Teaching Residency is an ambitious, teacher-centered effort to invigorate underserved Baltimore City schools with great teachers. BCTR provides a diverse and passionate group of mission-driven aspiring teachers an affordable and accelerated pathway to the classroom.  
We recruit, train, certify and support accomplished professionals, recent college graduates and graduating seniors who aren’t yet certified as teachers, but possess the dedication and content knowledge to teach in some of the highest-needs schools. We provide the training, coaching and leadership development needed to provide our students a quality education. 
You may have built a successful career, and now wish to use those skills to impact our next generation. You could be an accomplished recent graduate who wants to share your passion for learning with the students of Baltimore City. Whatever your background, you have high expectations for all students and are deeply invested in ensuring all students have access to the education they deserve.   

We are currently seeking outstanding candidates to teach critical-need subjects, including Science, Math, English, Elementary Education, Early Childhood Education and Special Education.

Classroom-Centered Preparation: Resident support is radically simple: focused practice on key skills, knowledge, and cultural mindsets to get new teachers off to a strong start. Where traditional teacher preparation leaves little time for hands-on skill-building, our innovative preparation is centered around actual teaching experience and focused practice on core skills, such as reflecting on students’ values, experiences, and ambitions to create opportunities for students to see themselves in challenging content that will prepare them for success.  
 
Certification that Counts: We hold high standards for licensure. Throughout your first year in the classroom, we carefully assess and support your growth, with expert coaching and personalized support. Residents are recognized not simply as certified teachers, but as having a proven track record of classroom success.  

Full Salary and Benefits: While pursuing certification, Residents work as full-time teachers in the Baltimore City Public Schools district and earn a full teacher’s salary plus comprehensive benefits. Once hired, you will be a full-time employee of Baltimore City Public Schools and will earn the same starting salary as any other first-year teacher. You will start as the teacher of record beginning the 2022-23 school year. Starting salary is approximately $48,632 plus comprehensive benefits.  

Eligibility Requirements  
 
  • Must have bachelor’s degree by June 2022 
  • Must currently be authorized to work in the U.S.  
  • Must be able to pass an FBI background investigation  
  • Must not be a licensed teacher 
  • Must have a minimum 2.75 cumulative undergraduate GPA 
  • Must pass initial licensure exams after acceptance
