The Department of Ophthalmology at Stanford University is seeking a part-time medical/scientific writer to work with Dr. Liao and her research collaborators and trainees in scientific publications and grant proposals. This position will receive a draft of the paper, review the organization of the writing, comment on logic and flow, comment on the organization of figures, and teach writing skills. Previous experience in scientific publication, grant writing, or editing is highly desirable.


This is a part-time remote-based opportunity.


Essential Duties Include:

  • Coordinate with PI and team to gather, organize and compile information from the research
  • Go through medical topics and assist physicians in writing research-related articles and reviews
  • Assist in preparing press releases, training material, and marketing content
  • Write articles and reports on research discoveries connected to health and medical fields
  • Communicate complex medical information in a succinct way
  • Work with clinical researchers in the development of research protocols
  • Participate in the preparation of various clinical research and regulatory documents
  • Make sure all applicable guidelines and regulations are followed
  • Stay up to date on current industry practices and regulations


Qualified candidate must have:

  • B.S./B.A.in related discipline .
  • Expert writing and editorial skills with a high level of AMA style and medical terminology expertise.
  • Proficiency in the suite of Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Proven organizational and timeline prioritization skills; scheduling flexibility to accommodate work volumes and the ability to manage multiple assignments.
  • Experience within a broad range of medical writing projects is preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including grammatical, editing, and proofreading skills, plus the ability to interpret and present complex analytical data.
  • The ability to write fluent, and grammatically-correct, American English.
  • Experience with major published literature databases (e.g., PubMed, Embase)
  • Excellent time management skills in order to manage multiple projects with minimal supervision, as well as work within stringent timelines while maintaining medical/scientific accuracy.
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • The ability to coordinate deliverables on multiple projects and provide leadership to client teams.
  • Proficiency with computers and their applications.
  • Good and effective organizational, negotiation, and planning skills.
  • Self-Motivation and adaptability.
