Overview
The Principal Coach and Program Specialist is a full-time position. We offer a competitive compensation with a hourly range of $20.46 +, based on experience and qualifications. We will pay more based on your team qualifications and experience. Our benefit package includes medical, dental, vision, life insurance, flexible spending account, 457 plan(s), IMRF Pension, $300 reimbursement for wellness related activities, tuition reimbursement, vacation, holidays, sick time and personal days.
We are flexible with the start date based on the current competitive season.  

 
Job Purpose
The Principal Coach and Program Specialist is responsible for planning quality gymnastics and related programs as well as provide quality instruction servicing a wide range of ages and ability levels.
 
Essential Functions
  • Prepare for and coach USAG boys team program levels 10 for competitions.
  • Instruct recreational gymnastics programs and activities in connection with the Revenue Departments program portfolio
  • Ensure safe participant use of the facility and equipment
  • Prepares and delivers class lesson plans within gymnastics program and related program standards
  • Evaluates, documents and communicates participant skill attainment and progress, as well as, oversees all part-time coaches regarding the skills evaluation process
  • Inventories and maintains equipment and supplies for programs and facility, recommending and justifying the need for the purchase of new and additional equipment
  • Responsible for ongoing evaluation of programs, services and facilities under his or her area of responsibility
  • Responsible for general maintenance/cleanliness of all Gymnastics and Recreation Center areas
  • Investigates and acts upon requests, suggestions, and complaints for gymnastics and related program students and parents
  • Attends staff meetings as needed or requested and offers productive contributions
  • Develop and accomplish professional and personal goals on an annual basis
 
Additional Functions
  • Perform office/clerical tasks as needed including registration, data entry, inputting program masters, inventory, record keeping, written reports, purchase orders and program rosters
  • Conducts regular safety inspections as assigned of program areas and equipment
  • Assists with the implementation of a preventative maintenance program for the care and replacement of gymnastics equipment
  • Creates a comfortable and safe environment for the participants before, during and after program periods
  • Researches new program ideas and recommends improvements
  • Performs other projects as assigned, including but not limited to working special events and coaching at off-site competitions
  • Serves on assigned committees upon request (i.e. Safety, Customer Service etc.)
  • Attends Park Board meetings upon request to provide information as deemed necessary
  • Communicates any program deviations to Programs & Operations Manager and customer service staff as needed
  • Survey customers for feedback and ideas
  • Available during unassigned hours as needed
  • Identifies and addresses daily challenges as they arise and communicates/reports said challenges and actions taken as appropriate to the Programs & Operations Manager
  • Follow established purchasing procedures, procurement card procedures and utilization of the purchase order system
  • Spots program participants as they use gymnastics equipment as needed
  • Prepare incident and accident reports and follow up reports
  • Assists with monitoring fully stocked first aid supply stations
  • Maintains a complete understanding of Park District emergency action plans and acts as a leader in the execution of the plans when required
  • Ability to respond to problems or stressful situations at all times with good judgment and accuracy
  • Ability to follow directions and work with limited supervision
  • Ability to convey a favorable Park District image with the media, partner organizations, and the public
  • Ability to work effectively with internal and external customers, recognizes diverse opinions and needs and maintains a positive working relationship with other employees
  • Establishes and maintains the highest standards of ethical conduct
 
Knowledge, Skill, and Work Experience Required
  • High School Diploma (or GED) equivalent
  • At least 3 years' experience coaching competitive gymnastics and coaching them at competitions.
  • Must have strong spotting skills on all events
  • At least 5 years experience instructing recreational gymnastics
  • Programming experience in gymnastics and related programs
  • USA Gymnastics (USAG) Professional Membership
  • USA Gymnastics Instructor Certification (U100 course)
  • USA Gymnastics Safe Sport Course (U110 course)
  • USA Gymnastics U112 and U113 Courses
  • USA Gymnastics Safety Certification or ability to obtain within 3 months of employment and keep certification current.
  • Certification in advanced Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), First Aid and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) within 3 months of employment and keep certification current. The District provides this training.

Recommended
  • Associates Degree (2year) or Bachelors Degree (4 year) in Recreation, Education, Physical Education or a related field
  • Gymnastics accreditation courses for preschool, girls and boys recreational/team and sports science through USAG University
 
Work Environment, Physical Demands and Considerations
  • Frequent - standing, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, running and walking
  • Occasional- sitting
  • Strength- requires handling heavy weight (up to 100lbs.)
  • Other requirements may include talking, hearing, and seeing to perform the following necessary duties: Teaching programs and supervising students, operating office equipment including but not limited to computers, printers, copiers, fax machines, adding machines and telephones
  • Normal gym conditions for majority of work, may include occasional light and temperature variations
  • Exposure to noise, dust, gymnastics chalk and elevation
  • May be exposed to occasional inclement weather as position may require outdoor work
  • Ability to present ideas and recommendations in a concise verbal and written manner
  • Ability to use independent judgment and initiative to respond to unexpected or unplanned events or demands
  • Ability to involve others through informal networking and involve others in decision making
  • Ability to speak effectively to the public
  • Ability to use math skills when measuring, calculating and estimating
  • Ability to complete tasks without immediate supervision
  • Ability to interpret and explain GRC and Park District policies and procedures

Hours
Weekday nights and weekends are required. You will be required to work more hours due to competitions or to cover for absent staff.
