Job Purpose:
Fitness Instructor is responsible for conducting a safe and effective group exercise class(es) for the patrons of the Park District of Oak Park.
 
Essential Functions:
  • Conduct and lead a fun, effective and safe group exercise class, which includes proper warm-up, workout and cool-down. 
  • Arrive to class early to set up, ensure equipment is safe and be prepared to deliver a successful class. 
  • Responsible for making sure all equipment is put away properly and in an orderly fashion. 
  • Be available before or after class if participants have a question about the class or a particular exercise, for a maximum of 15 minutes outside of class time.
  • Make any necessary to exercise modifications to ensure a safe and effective class.
  • Become familiar with participants and strive to create a community feel in class. 
  • Perform job safely and in compliance with District safety rules and procedures.
  • Communicate and enforce Park District rules and policies.
  • Provide excellent customer service and maintain a positive public image by addressing questions and concerns from staff, patrons, participants, and parents immediately. Contact and ask for assistance from supervisor or other Park District staff when necessary.
  • Communicate any program/patron concerns, questions, or changes to Program Supervisor, as soon as possible. If there is an immediate concern notify the Facility Attendant on duty (in the absence of the Program Supervisor).
  • Report maintenance needs to supervisor; follow-up on status with supervisor and/or maintenance supervisor.
  • Complete accident and incident reports and report any issues to supervisor. 
 
Additional Functions:
  • Attend staff meetings and trainings as specified.
  • Audit MINDBODY roster and sign-in sheet to confirm attendance accuracy; modify as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor or other Park District administrative personnel.
  • Must maintain current industry certifications.
  • Certification in advanced Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), First Aid and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) within 1 month of employment and keep certification current. The District provides this training.
 
Knowledge, Skill, and Work Experience Required:
  • Must have previous education or experience in teaching group fitness classes.
  • Current national certification as a group fitness instructor.
  • Knowledgeable in health and fitness field
  • Must have the ability to solve problems as they arise and be able to perform tasks without supervision.
  • Must be highly motivated and able to assume a positive and active role in the park, even while working under potentially stressful conditions (hot or cold weather, upset or injured participants, etc.)
  • Must have the ability to enforce park district rules and make sound decisions in order to secure the safety and well-being of all park visitors, facilities, and equipment.
  • Must be able to complete required Park District trainings.
 
Recommended:
Certification in additional group fitness formats.
 
Work Environment, Physical Demands and Considerations:
  • Frequent standing, jumping, squatting, lunging, walking, jogging, lifting, stretching and balancing. Must be able to demonstration exercises for class participants.
  • Occasional sitting, kneeling, crawling
  • Work requires repetitive movements of various types of strength training equipment. May also require handling an average weight (up to 30lbs) of materials or equipment. Must be able to lift up to 30lbs
  • Normal studio conditions for majority of work, may include occasional light and temperature variations
  • May be exposed to occasional inclement weather as position may require outdoor work
  • Must be able to respond to problem situations in a mature manner and within the policies and procedures of the Park District of Oak Park.
  • Ability to work independently without constant supervision.
  • Ability to understand and carry out verbal and/or written instructions efficiently and effectively and to read printed material.
  • Ability to interact and communicate well with others
  • Ability to interpret and explain District policies and procedures.
  • Ability to follow safety guidelines and exercise judgment in all aspects of responsibility.
  • Ability to resolve conflict safely, calmly and effectively.
