Field Applications Scientist II

Position Summary/Objective:
The Field Applications Scientist (FAS) II is the primary technical application support contact for Takara instrument customers. The FAS II is responsible for customer training, and technical support. The FAS II will partner with the commercial team to deliver pre-sale and post-sale technical support of the instrument portfolio. The goal of the FAS II role is to ensure maximum customer satisfaction of instrument platforms, resulting in sustained customer relations and long-term success.

The Field Applications Scientist II role is predominately remote-based with periodic on-site work in San Jose, CA.

Approximately 75% travel, including overnight, is required. International travel may be required.

Essential Functions:
  • Provides post-sales training at customer site, conducts operational quality assessment, instructs customers on use and maintenance of instrument systems. 
  • Performs regular troubleshooting of issues related to customer’s use of instrumentation, including assessment of customer’s technical skills, assay design, proper use of software and bioinformatic tools.
  • Resolves and/or escalates customer issues.
  • Works closely with Field Engineering team to troubleshoot application versus instrument issues.
  • Provides pre-sales support by working in partnership with the Business Development Team. Provides technical product seminars, conducts product demonstrations, and consults with customers during the sales process to understand scientific objectives and help close orders.
  • Supports technical training for sales team.
  • Provides regular updates on success and improvements to Marketing and R&D teams.
  • Provides competitive feedback to Marketing and R&D teams.
  • Performs regular maintenance of system documentation.
  • Maintains company CRM database, documents all technical communications and customer interactions daily.
  • This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

Education/Certification, Experience, and Competencies:
  • MS/PhD in Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry or related scientific field. A BA or BS may be considered with significant field experience. 
  • Advanced understanding of single cell applications, Next Generation Sequencing, and genomic applications and expression analysis application is required for this position.
  • Experience in RNA and DNA library construction for Illumina and Ion Torrent based platforms is required.
  • Requires a minimum of 2+ years of field application experience.
  • Requires a minimum of 3+ years of laboratory or related work experience; prior molecular cell biology experience skills are extremely desirable.
  • Prior automation experience skills are extremely desirable.
  • Able to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Capable of working independently, is self-motivated and proactive.
  • Is customer-centric and keenly aware of markets, and competitors.
  • Demonstrates a sense of urgency, contagious optimism and a “can do” attitude.
  • Valid driver’s license is required.
