Associate Director, Government and Community Relations

Position Overview
Under the direct supervision of the Managing Director, External Affairs (with support from the Vice President, External Affairs), the Associate Director, Government and Community Relations, will support diverse strategic initiatives to raise visibility and support from elected, civic and community leaders for Para Los Niños’ mission and work.
The Associate Director will collaborate with program staff to build a pipeline of parent and community advocates in support of Para Los Niños. This is a great opportunity for a dynamic, experienced, creative, and thoughtful leader who can lead multiple advocacy initiatives and build strong, lasting systems to support them. 
 
Duties
The Associate Director, Government and Community Relations will perform a broad range of duties including: 
  • Manage and Execute PLN’s Strategic External Relationship Development Plan: Lead and implement strategy to develop positive working relationships with a portfolio of elected offices, partner organizations and community leaders to build support for Para Los Niños children, youth, and families. The scope of work includes: building coalitions with diverse partners, developing relationships with external constituents and engaging other PLN staff and leadership as appropriate, developing and implementing communications and engagement calendar with elected offices and external partners, and training and building capacity of PLN children, youth, and families to attend meetings with elected officials. 
  • Lead PLN’s Digital Equity Coalition Work: With multi-year funding from the California Community Foundation, this role will play a leadership role across the county. This role with work closely with PLN’s Project Innovations Los Angeles to create a youth fellows program to advocate for high quality broadband for all in Los Angeles.
  • Manage PLN Parent Engagement around Key Issues: Working closely with PLN staff, the Director will meet with parents across the organization to build a bench of parents to advocate for issues that are important to them and important to the sustainability of PLN programming including charter school renewal, expansion of mental health services, and expansion of early childhood services. The scope of work includes developing the content and programming, leading parent workshops and trainings, managing all logistics and communications associated with the program. As part of this role, the Director will manage a part time parent advocate to support on parent engagement work.
  • Manage Advocacy Communications and Efforts: The Associate Director will serve as the advocacy lead for all cross-functional parent engagement efforts at PLN and serve as a point for upcoming projects such as 2020 Census Outreach and Voter Registration efforts.
  • Event Support: The Associate Director will support events where elected officials will be in attendance such as Felices Fiestas, Dia De Los Muertos, and our Annual Benefit Dinner
  • Track and Monitor Legislative Policy: Track policy and legislation that impact PLN children, youth, and families including K-12 education, after school, mental health, community transformation, youth workforce services, and early education; engage external constituents with advance items as appropriate; provide legislative and policy updates to the PLN community as appropriate.
  • Data Management: Create a universal system to communicate to all PLN stakeholders; Manage and maintain data tracking systems that tracks all touchpoints with parents, youth, and external constituents
  • Fundraising: Work with External Affairs and Development staff to find additional funding for advocacy and external affairs work and closely work with elected officials to find funding for our programs and other services
  • Internal and External Engagement: Work collaboratively with staff and external partners to find opportunities for staff to showcase their work and share best practices with a broader audience.
 
Qualifications and Experience Requirements
  • Commitment to Para Los Niños’ core values and mission
  • Knowledge of urban school environments, early education, youth workforce services, and other policies that impact our programs
  • Ability to work effectively in a multi-layered organization and build strong relationships with diverse stakeholders, including educators, school leaders, other school-based and home office staff, civic leaders, and elected officials
  • Proficient communication skills: Ability to write memoranda, create reports and facilitate meetings.
  • Data fluency: Expertise in designing/evaluating both canned and ad hoc reports.
  • Goal Setting: Understanding of outcome-based performance and process for determining key metrics.
  • Ability to work independently, and coordinate multiple large projects through planning, prioritizing, and multi-tasking in a fast paced environment.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) highly preferred
  • Valid driver’s license plus ability to provide own transportation to complete travel requirements of job.
 
Education and Certification Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree 
  • Three (3) years of professional, full-time experience working in advocacy or parent or community engagement efforts or on legislative and policy issues or political campaigns
  • Work schedule requires occasional evenings and weekends as needed
  • Successfully pass all post offer, pre-employment screening requirements, including criminal background check, drug test and provide proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
  • Current certification in CPR/First Aid
