Accountant - Journey/Senior


 
The Department of Revenue is a learning organization with a mission to strengthen Wisconsin through fair tax and lottery administration, while educating and serving the public, our customers, and communities. We are looking for Accountant Journey/Senior employee. This position is responsible for performing complex duties as Revenue Accountant and GAAP accountant for all General Program Revenue (GPR), Program Revenue (PR), and Segregated Funds (SEG) accounts associated with revenue accounting of all tax types administered by the Department. This includes reconciling tax revenue appropriations, preparing and reviewing adjusting entries to close the fiscal year as well as preparing and reviewing accrual entries under Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

Remote/Telework up to 60%. Note: After completion of probation, you can gradually increase up to 60% based on performance and workload needs. Position Summary

These positions are located in the Enterprise Services Division, Financial Management Services Bureau. Under the general supervision of the Section Chief.

The Accountant Journey/Senior is expected to reconcile, analyze and research accounting data in order to provide assurance of the integrity of the financial records. This position requires knowledge of financial rules and regulations for a broader variety and complexity of revenue sources and tax types. This position analyzes complex accounting data and reconciles revenue appropriations that are interfaced between the state accounting system (STAR) and the Department's tax processing system (WINPAS). These appropriation reconciliations involve high volume and high dollar transactions. The position reviews complex accounting systems and develops accounting policies and procedures to ensure proper internal controls over financial transactions.

This position supports Support State and Local Finance and Revenue Accounting Sections. This position is responsible for preparing various financial revenue reports. This position is responsible for developing, and maintaining complex automated accounting systems, interpreting, and applying accounting rules and regulations, and performing other administrative functions relating to Revenue Accounting. This position will share duties as the Technical Business Analyst services for the Department. Responsible for ensuring the requirements of the Revenue Accounting Section are accomplished through the tax and accounting technology solutions adopted and configured by the Department and the State. Salary Information

Starting salary will be between $23.85 and $39.36 per hour for Accountant Journey and $24.33 and $40.15 per hour for Accountant Senior, depending on experience and qualifications, plus benefits. For information on state benefits click here. Current state employees' pay will be set in accordance with pay upon appointment provisions for the compensation plan for broadband 07-03. A twelve-month probationary period is required.



Job Details

The department will conduct a background check, fingerprint check and tax compliance check prior to making an offer to hire. Interview results may be reused in accordance with the State of WI interview reuse policy.

Qualifications

Minimally qualified candidates will have:
  • Experience using GAAP and account programs.
  • Experience maintaining and reconciling a variety of accounts.
  • Experience preparing or auditing financial reports and/or journal entries.
  • Experience using automated accounting systems.
  • Experience developing Excel formulas, pivots, etc.

Well-qualified candidates will also have:
  • Experience with process improvements.
  • Experience establishing and/or evaluating internal controls.
  • Experience with PeopleSoft accounting systems.
  • Experience auditing a process and rectifying an audit finding.
