Secondary Teaching Resident (5th-12th Grade)

The Capital Teaching Residency is a three year program. Residents spend the first year of this commitment—their residency year—training in a KIPP DC classroom with an experienced mentor teacher and completing relevant coursework aligned to their teaching practice. Through our gradual release model, residents are set up for success by becoming an integral part of their school community and gaining more responsibility in their classroom over time. Residents have the opportunity to obtain their DC teacher licensure.

At the end of the residency year, residents who have completed all program requirements have the opportunity to interview for lead teacher or senior resident positions at KIPP DC or one of our partner public charter schools in the District. Residents commit to two additional years of teaching beyond their residency year.

The majority of primary residents work in prekindergarten, kindergarten, and first grade, while a small number are assigned to second through fourth grade.
