College Essay Instructor

College Essay Instructor 

FLEX is looking for instructors with exceptional writing and teaching abilities to guide students through the college application process. The College Essay Instructors will collaborate with high school juniors and seniors on crafting their college application essays, covering various platforms such as UC, Common App, and school-specific supplements. Successful candidates will be skilled content creators and editors, demonstrating the determination to foster and enhance students' writing skills. These instructors will engage with students in one-on-one or small group settings from June to November, dedicating approximately 10-15 hours per week. Training and curriculum support will be provided. This position is expected to commence in mid-May of 2024.

We seek individuals who exhibit a strong willingness to embrace and adapt to FLEX's distinctive approach to college essay writing instruction. The ideal candidates will be open-minded, receptive to innovative teaching methods, and enthusiastic about acquiring the skills needed to effectively convey our writing strategies to high school students. We highly value educators committed to continuous professional development, open to learning the FLEX way, and motivated to enhance their expertise in guiding students through the college essay writing process.

*Training will be provided.

What we’re looking for:

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Strong communication skills to establish rapport with students and Admissions Consultants
  • Proven writers and/or experienced writing instructors/coaches who can drive a student to succeed and who are committed to helping students tell their story
  • Experience teaching or tutoring writing with high school or college students
  • Eagerness to learn about the U.S. college application process and associated essays
  • An ability to provide feedback and next steps to students in real time
  • Deadline-oriented work style and an ability to motivate students to achieve milestones
  • Availability to consistently work evenings and Saturdays
  • Proficient computer literacy skills (i.e., word processing, video conferencing, e-communication, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Three years related experience
  • Advanced degree in professional writing or education
  • Strong understanding of the U.S. college application process and associated essays
  • Classroom and time management skills: toggling individual and group consultants given certain time constraints
