Health Educator Intern

Interns engage in educating post-secondary and young adults with special needs, focusing on individuals with moderate to severe disabilities. They provide valuable insights on various health topics, including nutrition, substance abuse prevention, personal hygiene, relationship building, and personal safety. The internship program offers a unique opportunity for participants to develop and implement engaging health and career development activities throughout the academic year, fostering personal growth and skill development for the individuals they serve.

This hybrid-style internship is student-facing and thus requires being on-site much of the time, with the flexibility to work remotely. Interns will have access to Goodwill of Silicon Valley Headquarters and Post-Secondary School Sites within Santa Clara, CA.

 

Duties include:

  • Teaching up to 3 health education classes for post-secondary students with special needs, moderate to severe (with teacher and staff present)
  • Guide various student enrichment activities
  • Participate in team-building meetings and weekly curriculum training
  • Plan and execute health program events, activities, and fundraisers for students
  • Network with various organizations
  • Completion of an individual leadership project (may vary)

 

Applicant Requirements:

  • Junior or Senior standing (>90 college units)
  • Maintain a valid driver's license
  • 9-month commitment (August – May)

 

Internship Requirements:

  • Attend ALL training sessions
  • TB Test (Cost covered by GW)
  • Fingerprinting by School District (Cost covered by GW)
  • Available approximately 10– 20 hours a week
  • Availability during post-secondary school hours for teaching (Monday – Friday 8am-3pm)
  • Availability outside of teaching time to prepare for lessons and other projects

 

Completion of internship

  • A stipend award upon the completion of the program, the number of facilitations completed, and internship involvement (each semester, December and May)
  • Letter of Recommendation from Program Manager; must be in good standing.
