Research Technician I (Rao Lab)

The Rao Lab is seeking a full-time entry-level research technician in the Center for Autoimmunity and Inflammation, Center for Cancer Immunotherapy at the La Jolla Institute for Immunology (San Diego). The candidate will be working with one or more senior postdoctoral fellows within a large team of highly motivated scientists. The project involves the study of clonal hematopoiesis, a precancerous condition that is related to aging and inflammation, with an emphasis on the role of DNA methylation and demethylation in stem cell function. The project will involve mouse handling, cell culture, molecular biology, immunology, flow cytometry, CRISPR/Cas9 screens, and diverse next-generation sequencing techniques (RNA-seq, ATAC-seq, 6-base sequencing). Some of the candidate’s time will be spent in managing the day-to-day operations of the laboratory, including keeping common lab supplies stocked and maintaining mouse colonies. Training and mentoring will be provided for the skills and knowledge involved. This is an excellent opportunity for those who are eager to learn and motivated to continue in biomedical research. 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide support for research and the daily operations of the lab (keeping common lab supplies stocked, keeping inventory, helping with ordering). 
  • Day-to-day laboratory maintenance and organization (inventory, defrosting freezers, organizing supplies/reagents). 
  • Mouse husbandry and animal experiments (weaning, inventory). 
  • Cell culture (making cell media, helping with cell culture experiments). 
  • Molecular biology (cloning, minipreps). 

 

Leveling Requirements 

Candidates must have:

  • Bachelor degree (BS/BA) in biology, molecular biology, or related field. 
  • Organizational skills, diligence, ability to self-motivate, multitask and excellent record-keeping skills. 
  • Ability to understand and describe previous project(s).

 

Preferred qualifications

  • Knowledge of molecular biology, mouse handling, cell culture, and immunology techniques 
  • 1 year+ lab experience in academic or industrial settings
