Lifeguard and Swim Lesson Instructor

Definition

City of Martinez is recruiting Lifeguards and Swim Lesson Instructors.

Under the direction of the Aquatics Director/Recreation Supervisor/Head Manager, this position will serve as a lifeguard, teach swim lessons, and provide general maintenance and janitorial tasks to the Rankin Aquatic Center.

Program Responsibilities: 

Supervise lap swim, general swim, and special swim program participants in and around the pool deck. Maintain safety and rule compliance. Instruct evening, afternoon and morning swim lessons on weekdays and weekends and provide participant evaluations. Maintain pool deck and restroom facilities for safety and cleanliness. Provide facility safety checks and maintain safety equipment. Move safety equipment, pool equipment and program supplies around the pool deck and storage areas. Administer First Aid, CPR and AED as needed. Cashier. Participate in all staff training, meetings, and skills assessments. Might be trained and assigned to check the quality of the pool water. Participate in all preseason and active season in-service training. Maintain a high level of professionalism and customer service. Must be able to deal with stressful situations.

Prerequisites:

Minimum 15 years old (at time of Lifeguard Certification final class date). Candidate possesses, or can obtain before working, certifications in Lifeguard Training, Standard First Aid/CPR for the Professional and Title 22 First Aid for Safety Personnel. Water Safety Instructor certification and previous aquatic experience are highly desirable.

Maximum of 1000 hours per fiscal year. This position is not eligible for City benefits. Paid sick leave will be accrued in accordance with the Healthy Workplaces/Healthy Families Act of 2014 (Assembly Bill1522).

Lap Swim, Swim Team, Swim Meets, Water Aerobics, Swim Lessons, Private Parties, Special Events, Recreational Swim

 June 17-August 9 (open all day, 7 days per week)

 

2024 Fall Schedule

Lap Swim, Swim Team, Water Aerobics, Weekend Recreational Swim

 August 10-October 30 (weekday afternoons/evenings, and weekends)                                                                           

Qualifications/Education/Experience

Minimum Requirement: 

Applicant MUST be responsible, reliable and mature; able to command respect, maintain discipline, provide quality customer service and works as part of a team. 

Must be a minimum of 15 years old.

Ability to speak Spanish or another language is desired.

Lifeguard Classes held at the Rankin Aquatic Center, 100 Buckley, Martinez, CA 94553. 

You must attend every day of a session; pass all skills and written tests to become certified in lifeguarding, professional CPR/AED and first aid and Title 22 (California Advanced First Aid) are included. Pick the session that works best for you.

  • April Session 1: *SPRING BREAK* April 1-3; M-W (8:00am-4pm)
  • April Session 2: April 19-21; F-Su (4:30pm-6:00pm)

      

$190* Residents and $200* Non-Residents

*Fee will be free to hired staff

Completing the Lifeguard Class does not guarantee employment with the City of Martinez.     

Hours:  

This position is part-time temporary. Staff is not guaranteed 40 hours per week but can work up to 40 hours as needed (specifically during summer season programming).  Lifeguards/Swim Instructors can be assigned to work any day of the week and/or split shifts. An average minimum of 15-20 hours per week will be required.

Program hours during the summer are typically Monday-Friday 6:30am-9:30pm and Saturday-Sunday 7:30am-7:30pm. Staff will be assigned shifts to meet the needs of programs. Monday mornings will be reserved for weekly staff training during the summer from 8am-12pm. Shifts are subject to change and are dependent upon program and staffing needs.

Job Requirements:

Be able to pass the swim test* (as required for American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification):

  • Swim 300 yards nonstop (12 laps total: 4 laps free style, 4 laps breaststroke, 4 laps choice)
  • Swim 20 yards to dive and retrieve a 10lbs rubber brick, then swim brick back to side of pool
  • Tread water without hands for two minutes
  • *Practice swim times will be available for lifeguard students before the start of class. Contact recreation at recreation@cityofmartinez.org for more info.

Must have completed a nationally recognized Lifeguard Certification course and present a valid and current certification. The following certifications are accepted: American Red Cross, YMCA USA Y-Guard, Starguard, Ellis and Associates.

Selection Process

A select number of the most experienced and best qualified applicants will be invited to interview.
