Cell Culture Manufacturing and Development Intern (Summer 2024 - Baltimore, MD)

As a Smiths Detection intern, you will have the opportunity to be working side-by-side with highly skilled individuals dedicated to making the world a safer place through technology innovations. Smiths Detection is the primary producer of CANARY (Cellular Analysis and Notification of Antigen Risks and Yields (CANARY) technology devices that are currently used in the protection of facilities from Biothreats, Plant pathogens, Food pathogens and Human pathogens around the world.

As the Cell Culture Intern you will assist the Science and Technology team with the cell culture process development and cell culture quality control that supports elements of the CANARY devices. As part of the internship program at Smiths Detection you will conduct an independent investigation into methods of process refinements with the current cell culture process. Past interns looked at the current process and proposed new and novel ways to increase the batch size of biosensor production lots which increases the amount of inventory.

All work will be under the supervision of S&T scientists.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Maintaining cell cultures
  • Quality control assays on cells
  • Cell quantification and assessments
  • Biology lab work
  • Biology lab maintenance
  • Data summaries and test reports
  • Complying with and promoting all relevant legal requirements & Smiths policies and procedures, including business ethics, data protection and health & safety

THE INDIVIDUAL: 

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Degree-track undergraduate or graduate student in biology, microbiology, biotechnology, bio engineering or related fields.
  • Experience in cell culture (including working with adherent and non-adherent mammalian cells, preparing master and working banks, and experience with cryopreservation techniques is a plus).
  • A basic working knowledge of cell biology, molecular biology, and immunology.

Desired Characteristics: 

  • Experience or knowledge of working in a GMP manufacturing facility.
  • Ability or desire to work in a BSL-2 facility.
  • Ability to help design experiments, interpret data, and prepare final reports.
  • Ability to troubleshoot protocols and procedures.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and possess the capability to work independently.
  • Highly organized, able to manage workflow, and multi-task between multiple projects.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft suite applications (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc…)

Eligibility Requirements:

  • You must be 18 years or older
  • You must be willing to work in an office in Edgewood, MD
  • You must be willing to take and pass a drug test as part of the selection process
  • You must be willing to submit to a background investigation as part of the selection process
