Police Apprentice (PT)

The City of Vacaville is now recruiting for Police Apprentice (PT). This is an intern-level, part-time, non-safety position within the Police Department. Individuals work on a part-time and/or as-needed basis while earning their Associate of Arts and/or a Bachelor's degree at an accredited college.  

Typical duties include, but are not limited to: 

  • Administrative tasks that support the Department
  • Completion of small ad hoc projects as they arise
  • Take police reports for crimes such as bicycle theft, automobile theft and burglary
  • Mark and arrange for abandoned vehicles to be towed
  • Enforce parking regulations by issuing traffic citations
  • Perform traffic and pedestrian control as directed
  • Participate in crime prevention activities such as neighborhood watch meetings and school and community group presentations
  • Maintain records and retrieve information
  • Attend weekend and/or evening training sessions
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required

Our part-time Police Apprentice position offers a dynamic opportunity to gain specialized training in various units. Apprentices rotate every three to four months, receiving focused instruction tailored to each unit's functions. This experience fosters collaboration across departments and divisions within the Police Department, providing invaluable exposure to diverse career paths in law enforcement.  

Specialized areas and duties include, but are not limited to: 

Records: Assist with front counter duties, data entry, document transportation, ticket signoffs and vehicle release processing. 
 
Evidence: Assist with the management of evidence intake, storage and transportation for external testing, in addition to purging and tracking for retention. Support evidence call-outs. 
 
Traffic: Aid in vehicle abatement, traffic control at events/collisions, DUI checkpoints and data tracking. 
 
Crime-Free Multi-Housing (within the Community Response Unit): Conduct compliance checks and inspections at crime-free apartments, business checks, data entry, statistical reporting and crime analysis.

Administration: Assist the various Police Department divisions such as Recruitment, Training, Alarms and Billing, Crime Prevention/Analysis and Community Outreach. Assist with outreach events, training exercises and recruitment activities.  Aid with updating and improving department forms.
 
Cadet Program: Assist in training Volunteer Police Cadets, be a liaison for issuance of equipment, building access and preparation of meeting materials. Aid with the organization of the annual Solano Cadet Academy and training of Cadet Program Leadership.

*Police Apprentice is a part-time position that is paid an hourly rate and can work up to a maximum of 129 hours per month.  Part-time positions are at-will, are not eligible for health or retirement benefits, and do not accrue leave time except for State-mandated sick leave (40 hours per year). 

 

ABOUT YOU

Minimum Qualifications:
Education:   High School Diploma or equivalent is required. Current enrollment in an accredited college or university and taking a minimum of 12 units towards an Associate and/or Bachelor's degree with a minimum 2.0 GPA required at the time of hire and continued employment. 

Experience:  Some public contact work experience is required. Community organization experience is desirable. Police Cadet/Explorer experience is preferred.  

Certification: A California Class C Driver’s License and a satisfactory driving record are conditions of initial and continued employment. 

Other: Must be at least 18 years old by the start of employment. Participation in the part-time Police Apprentice program is limited to a maximum of 4 years. Failure to maintain the educational attendance requirements will result in release from the program.
