Survival School Coordinator and Organizing Associate

Senior and Disability Survival School Coordinator and Organizing Associate

Full-time (37.5 hours/week)

San Francisco Senior and Disability Action mobilizes and educates seniors and people with disabilities to fight for individual rights and social justice. Through individual support and collective action, we work together to create a city and world in which seniors and people with disabilities can live well and safely.

We seek a dedicated professional to lead our Senior and Disability Survival School (SDSS) program and support our organizing campaigns. SDSS empowers seniors and people with disabilities to take action in their communities. Utilizing presentations, discussions, and popular education, SDSS trains seniors and people with disabilities to effectively access vital community resources and to exercise their rights. SDSS can also be an important entry point into SDA’s community organizing campaigns, as participants learn how their individual struggles can be addressed through collective action. Each Survival School consists of 4-5 weekly classes. Classes are held in different neighborhoods and include interpretation into languages such as Chinese, Russian, Spanish, Korean, and Filipino/Tagalog with the help of interpreter contractors.

The SDSS Coordinator will be responsible for all aspects of this program, including coordinating classes, conducting outreach, arranging interpretation, facilitating class sessions, conducting evaluations, and reporting to the program’s funder, San Francisco Department of Disability and Aging services (DAS). The SDSS Coordinator will coordinate with different sites, presenters, interpreters, and participants. Excellent communication skills and attention to detail are necessary for this role. Cultural competence in working with people who are living with disabilities, low-income, BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and limited- or non-English speakers is required. SDA will consider qualified Graduate students pursuing their Masters or higher.

The person in this role will provide as-needed support to SDA’s organizing campaigns, in coordination with staff organizers. This may involve working on a variety of issue areas over time, including housing, transit, pandemic safety, and healthcare. Responsibilities will vary based on organizational needs, time available after prioritizing the SDSS program, and the skills and interests of the person holding this role. Tasks may include assisting with event planning, logistical and technical support, outreach to members, etc.

Hiring for this position is contingent on renewal of SDA’s funding from the San Francisco Department of Disability and Aging Services.
