Air Pollution Specialist

The Monitoring and Laboratory Division (MLD) is seeking highly qualified applicants to work in the Special Analysis Section (SAS) of the Northern Laboratory Branch. SAS is a state-of-the-art laboratory dedicated to providing analytical support for CARB's Consumer Products Program and Composite Wood Products Airborne Toxic Control Measure. SAS staff perform analysis on chemically formulated consumer products and aerosol coating products to ensure compliance with volatile organic compound standards, toxic air contaminant prohibitions, and greenhouse gas emissions. SAS staff also perform analysis on composite wood products for formaldehyde emissions and provides additional laboratory services in support of investigative and special studies for California Air Resources Board (CARB)’s various other Air Pollution Control Programs
 

SAS staff are responsible for chemical analysis, analytical data review and reporting, sample management, maintaining chain-of-custody, and specific analysis to support CARB’s Enforcement Division (ED) and Transportation & Toxics Division (TTD). In a fast-paced, production-oriented environment, SAS staff are also responsible for ongoing analytical method development and the improvement of existing methods. 

 

The numerous instruments utilized by the section include Ion Chromatograph, High Performance Liquid Chromatograph with Triple Quadrupole Mass Spectrometer, Karl Fisher water analyzer, and Gas Chromatograph with various detectors such as Flame Ionization, Thermal Conductivity, and Mass Spectrometers. 

 

SAS staff interact with several other Branches within MLD and other CARB Divisions as well as stakeholders, other CalEPA departments and offices, USEPA and the Office of the State Attorney General.

Duties require participation in the DMV Pull Notice Program.

Working Conditions

 

This position may be eligible for hybrid in-office work and in-state telework. The amount of telework is at the agency's discretion and is based on the California Air Resource Boards' (CARB) current telework policy. While the CARB may support telework, some in-person attendance is also required. 

The positions at the CARB may be eligible for telework with in-person attendance based on the operational needs of the position under Government Code 14200 for eligible applicants residing in California, subject to the candidate meeting telework eligibility criteria outlined in the CalEPA telework policy and/or future program need. Employees not residing in California are not eligible for telework. Regardless of hybrid telework eligibility, all employees may be required to report to the position’s designated headquarters location at their own expense, as indicated on their duty statement.

  • Requires being in a stationary position, consistent with office work, for extended periods.
  • Standard office environment (for example, artificial lighting, controlled temperature, etc.)
  • Daily use of a personal computer, office equipment, and/or telephone.
  • Must be able to move/transport equipment weighing up to 30 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
