This is an opportunity to assist the District Wildlife Biologist in inventorying and monitoring diverse wildlife populations.

Duties

Some of what our Assistant District Wildlife Biologist will enjoy doing, 

Inventory and monitor wildlife populations: 

  • Conduct assigned wildlife surveys, including aerial surveys.
  • Collaborate with WDFW species specialists and data managers to access, manage, and analyze data.
  • Use ArcGIS to make maps for inventory and survey efforts.
  • Assess wildlife health, including collecting samples needed to identify the presence of disease within wildlife populations.
  • Conduct assigned wildlife captures, including wildlife handling and use of immobilization drugs.
  • Train, assign, and direct others such as volunteers and other WDFW employees to conduct wildlife surveys.

Participate in the development of recommendations for wildlife management, recreational opportunity, land use proposals, and wildlife habitat enhancement: 

  • Analyze harvest and other available data, review literature, and apply professional experience to develop recommendations for wildlife management and recreation.
  • Seek input on wildlife-related recreation from all types of wildlife users.

Communicate within WDFW, with other agencies, and with the public on diverse wildlife issues:

  • Communicate harvest regulations, hunting opportunities, wildlife viewing, injured and nuisance wildlife, wildlife rehabilitation, and wildlife identification.
  • Present information orally and in writing to a variety of audiences.
  • Respond to requests for information.
  • Meet with members of the public to seal/pin/inspect select harvested species.

Implement wildlife management and conservation activities:

  • Assist with capture, population augmentation, and translocation efforts.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work Setting, including hazards:
    • Ability to work in inclement weather over difficult terrain, including slippery rocks, steep banks, and mud.
    • Walk, bend, stoop, and occasionally carrying up to 40 pounds (may include traps and kayaks).
    • Safely load and transport equipment and gear such as kayaks, barbed wire, and deceased deer into trucks. Tasks occur frequently during the summer and occasionally during the winter. Frequently transport smaller equipment.
    • Tow snowmobiles 5-10 times depending on the season.
    • Ability to perform aerial and water-based surveys and work with unpredictable and potentially dangerous wild animals.
    • May be around firearms.
    • Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations.
  • Schedule:
    • Typically, Monday – Friday, 8:00 A.M. – 5:00 P.M.
    • During field seasons incumbent should be available for a non-scheduled workweek, travel, and long, irregular hours.
  • Travel Requirements:
    • Frequent travel to field sites within the district.
    • Occasional out of state and overnight travel.
  • Tools and Equipment:
    • Motor vehicles, snowmobiles, trailers, and small boats are used in field situations.
    • Field equipment such as binoculars, spotting scopes, GPS units, wildlife capture equipment, chemical immobilization drugs, knives and scalpels.
  • Customer Interactions:
    • Considerable interaction with hunters, wildlife viewers, other wildlife enthusiasts, private landowners, and the public.
    • Regular interaction with other natural resources professionals, including tribal co-managers.
    • Occasionally confronted by individuals that may not agree with Department policies or decisions.

 

Qualifications:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Bachelor's degree in fisheries, wildlife management, natural resource science, or environmental science.

AND

  • One (1) year of professional experience in one (1) or more of the following: Fish management or fish research. Wildlife management or wildlife research. Habitat management or habitat research.

Please Note: 

  • Closely related qualifying experience in wildlife or natural resource management may be substituted for the required education on a year-by-year basis.
  • A Master’s degree or PhD degree in the applicable science will substitute for the required experience.

Certifications/Licenses: 

  • Valid Driver’s License.

Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment:

  • Aircraft safety training must be taken before the first flight.
  • First Aid training to be obtained within six (6) months of hire.
  • Wildlife handling training to be obtained within one (1) year of hire.
  • Chemical immobilization training to be obtained within one (1) year of hire.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

In addition to those required qualifications, our ideal applicant will also have some or all of the following: 

A Master’s Degree, or a higher level degree, in wildlife biology/management or a closely related field.

Job knowledge:

  • Wildlife population relationships and ecology.
  • Wildlife habitat relationships.
  • Wildlife survey methods and appropriate statistical analysis.
  • Principles of wildlife harvest management.
  • Wildlife species identification.
  • Wildlife management tools and field techniques.
  • Data management and statistical programs such as MS Access, MS Excel, and R.
  • ArcGIS spatial data management and manipulation.
  • Proficient with MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Ability to:

  • Conduct aerial (fixed-wing and helicopter) surveys and radio telemetry monitoring.
  • Manage a heavy workload effectively.
  • Deliver engaging information and educational presentations to the public.
  • Conduct data analysis using statistical software.
  • Collect biological samples from live or dead animals.
  • Conduct field surveys to collect data on animal presence/absence, use, and movement.
