The Opportunity
WSDOT is seeking a currently enrolled college student or recent graduates to fill an internship position in Capital Facilities Office in Olympia, WA. This internship position will support the Capital Facilities Office with small-scale, short-term research projects. Some of the duties include collecting and analyzing data, conducting field surveys, performing literature searches, assessing data to determine outcome or results, and reporting findings and conclusions in writing or on web-based applications. You will also give presentations to interested audiences. This internship will provide you the opportunity to gain valuable experience in the practical application of planning procedures, concepts, and techniques in an on-the-job environment.
 
What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Capital Facilities Intern will:
 

  • Develop studies and work plans, collect and analyze data, and report results.
  • Learn about planning, operations, construction and administration programs and projects by participating in tasks that help shape an individual inquiry or project.
  • Conduct routine data manipulation and analysis to provide a statistical priority, or develop an agency plan, design, or position.
  • Assist with formulating a policy recommendation or other tasks to support the research of topics of importance to the agency.
  • Review facility lease documents to extract and summarize targeted information.
  • Prepare reports, technical memorandum, and briefings and deliver presentations on research findings and results.
  • Participate in meetings, conferences, and other events.

 
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
 

  • Enrolled in or a recent graduate of a bachelor's or graduate degree program in transportation planning, environmental planning, urban planning, regional planning or land use planning, public administration, or related field at an accredited college or university.
  • Graduation from high school or satisfactory completion of GED.
  • Strong technical skills with the capability to learn and use a variety of software such as Microsoft Office, Esri GIS, and other software.
  • Strong understanding of basic statistical analysis, research methods, and procedures.
  • Ability to interpret images for collection of information.
  • Valid driver’s license with the ability to drive to field sites and attends meetings.

  • This internship opportunity is expected to last up to 3-6 months.
  • This recruitment may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs.
  • This position offers flexible/hybrid remote work options.
  • Statewide travel is an expectation of this position.
  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements. Information on other compensation types for non-represented positions can be found in Chapter 357-28 of the Washington Administrative Code.
