The City of Pacifica is seeking an individual to join as Recreation Coordinator for Aquatics Program. This is a fulltime, fully benefitted position with the Recreation Division of the Parks, Beaches, & Recreation Department. Details follow below!

The Position

Under direct supervision of the Recreation Supervisor, the recreation coordinator assists in the development, supervision and evaluation of a wide range of recreation programs for various age groups; organizes and conducts special events; oversees volunteers and part-time staff; has responsibility for assigned portions of the Recreation Supervisor program responsibilities; and does other related work as assigned.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION REQUIREMENTS

The Recreation Coordinator must have the ability to:

  • Possess excellent written and oral communication skills in order to generate reports, maintain records, and provide written employee evaluations.
  • Work independently and within teams.
  • Work some evenings and weekends.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office 365 with ability to keep accurate records, maintain program budgets, complete city paperwork, and communicate with a variety of agencies, vendors, community groups, and members of the public.
  • Maintain facilities and equipment used in its programs.
  • Travel to different sites and locations.

 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Organizes, and directs the work of subordinates in developing and implementing broad and diversified recreation programs service to meet community needs;
  • Maintains appropriate budgetary controls; responsible for a variety of programs; plans and implements training and supervision of part-time staff; handles the promotion of programs including but not limited to communication with local publications, online media, the City's web site, and social media platforms;
  • Responsible for a variety of youth and adult programs including special events;
  • Assists with programming, coordination, and scheduling the Community Center and youth activities;
  • Work alone, as well as work well with others.

 

SPECIAL DUTIES

Recreation coordinator positions will be assigned to one or more of the following areas: administration; community sports, aquatics; special events; the Community Center, elementary aged recreation; teens; class registrations and the department activity guide; community rentals and facilities; administration.

 

OTHER WORK REQUIREMENTS

  • Physical Skills: Ability to sit, stand, walk, run, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, twist, climb; lift and carry 50 pounds; use standard office equipment, including a computer; vision to read printed materials; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone.
     
  • Work Environment: Work in an indoor and outdoor environment; exposure to noise and confining workspaces.
     
  • Ability To: Travel to different sites and locations; drive safely to different sites and locations; maintain a safe driving record; maintain a neat and clean appearance. Some positions must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.

 

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES:

Any combination equivalent to experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:

  • Possession of a BA/BS degree in recreation or related field and one year of professional recreation work experience.
  • Basic computer skills needed for reports & recordkeeping.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word a must and Excel skills desired.
  • Proficiency in recreation (scheduling and class registration) software such as Activenet highly desired.

REQUIRED LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

  • Must possess and maintain a valid California Driver’s License
  • Ability to obtain American Red Cross First Aid certificate and CPR Adult, Child and Infant CPR within six-months of employment
  • Title 22 Certification
  • American Red Cross First Aid Lifeguard Certification (including First Aid and CPR) within twelve-months of employment

HIGHLY DESIRED CERTIFICATIONS:

  • American Red Cross Water Safety Certification

BENEFITS

  • Holidays: Eleven (11) days per year plus two (2) Floating Holidays.
  • Vacation: From 11-27 days per year, depending on length of service.
  • Sick leave: Accrual is one day per month, with no limit on accrual.
  • Retirement: In addition to salary, the City shall contract with CALPers to provide a retirement plan that utilizes formula for Classic CalPERS members 2.5 @ 55 and for non-classic 2% @ 62 for individuals with no prior CalPERS service or reciprocity.  
  • Insurance:  The City provides its employees with a cafeteria plan allowance that allows employees to purchase health care benefits through either Teamsters Union #856 Health and Welfare or CalPERS medical benefits plan. 

The City contributes toward a dental insurance plan for employee and all eligible dependents who opt for non-union health care benefits.

The City pays premiums for:

  • Life insurance premium in the amount of $30,000.
  • Long term disability insurance (to begin sixty days after onset of non-work-related illness or injury).

Training: The City will pay up to $2,000 per year toward the cost of books and tuition required as part of courses taken that are job-related (suspended under current MOU).

Deferred Compensation: Employees may participate in a choice of three deferred compensation plans.

Union Membership: Union membership is required.

Examination and Selection Process:

Applicants will be assessed on the application submitted. Applicants will be screened to the most qualified and invited to the next step in the recruitment process which will include a panel interview and may include a practical skill exercise.  Human Resources is unable to schedule make-up examinations.
