We are looking for a motivated Environmental Scientist to support our water resource policy and management work in the Division of Water Rights. The ideal candidate would blend their scientific, technical, critical thinking, and communication skills to inform state decision makers when making consequential water rights decisions that benefit the people and environment of California.

The State Water Resources Control Board’s Division of Water Rights has an opening for one Environmental Scientist in the Drought Planning Unit in the Drought Planning, Hearings, and Special Projects Section. The position is located at 1001 I Street, right in the heart of downtown Sacramento next to light rail stations and other public transportation. 

Duties:

This position offers a unique and challenging opportunity to participate in a multidisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, geologists, and attorneys developing and implementing a variety of drought planning and management initiatives for the State Water Board’s Division of Water Rights. The Environmental Scientist in this position will:

  • analyze data and interpret regulatory requirements to improve water rights management and planning for future droughts;
  • use data visualization tools (e.g. GIS, PowerBI, and others) to visualize and interpret water rights data;
  • occasionally participate and present in public meetings and have individual communication with the public about water rights regulations;
  • may also be responsible for carrying out water right hearings and adjudicatory proceedings before the State Water Resources Control Board;
  • may also work on a variety of special projects and assignments designed to support other high priority programs, initiatives, and efforts within the Division of Water Rights.

Salary information – CalHR salary rules allow appointment at the entrance rate (Cal. Code Regs., tit. 2, § 599.673) of a classification. For classes with alternate ranges, placement is based on education/experience.

Salary: $4,145 - $7,926 / month
