Forensics Specialist

The Position:  
 To perform technical work in photography and in the collection, identification, and preservation of crime scene evidence; to log in evidence and maintain records; perform latent print processing; enter firearms evidence into the National Integrated Ballistic Network (NIBIN), and do related work as required.
 
 Essential Functions:
 Functions may include, but are not limited to, the following:
 Recognize, preserve and collect physical evidence at crime and accident scenes; take digital photographs under field and laboratory conditions; process and organize digital images using computer software programs; make computer generated crime scene diagrams; prepare detailed crime scene, laboratory analysis, and other reports; locate, identify, collect, protect, preserve and analyze materials and substances as evidence at crime scenes and other locations using a variety of specialized equipment and techniques; prepare, process, enhance and lift latent prints; record or make visible trace evidence through such photographic techniques as macro, micro, infrared, ultraviolet and alternate light sources; prepare castings of tire, foot wear, tool and other impressions; assess firearms evidence for entry into NIBIN; perform chemical and physical enhancements of obscured serial numbers on firearms, in order to reconstruct the serial number for entry into tracking databases and perform preliminary comparisons for matches; perform basic examination of blood, hair, fiber, firearms, narcotics, and other types of physical evidence; photograph, document, and collect physical evidence at autopsies; serve as a recognized expert in court in the presentation and verification of collected evidence such as bloodstain interpretation, projectiles, fingerprints, photography, and crime scene diagramming; build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service; and performs related duties as assigned.
