What is GIS?

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a way to collect, keep, and study data that helps us understand where things are. Imagine a map that not only shows places but also tells you lots of information about those places. GIS helps us make smart choices by showing us patterns and links between different things on a map.

If you love maps, figuring out puzzles, or learning about nature with technology, a GIS internship is perfect for you. Here’s what you’ll get to do:

  • Work with Data: You’ll learn how to handle and organize important data, like updating maps and keeping them accurate.
  • Make Maps: You’ll use special rules and tools to create easy-to-understand and helpful maps.
  • Create Web Maps: You’ll also get to make maps on the computer that other people can interact with online.

Minimum requirements:

  • Willingness and ability to learn new skills and work in an office setting 
  • Ability to work well with diverse groups including the general public 
  • Ability to understand and follow provided instructions 
  • Familiarity with common computer programs including Microsoft Office Suite
  • Experience or knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is highly desired

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Ensures the accuracy and completeness of digital data and maps
  2. Assists data entry and creation, map creation and spatial analysis
  3. Develops and maintains effective and cooperative working relationships with County employees and the public
