The reporting location for this position is the Folsom Sector Office in Folsom, CA.  This position will work under the direction of the Folsom Sector Superintendent.  

Job Description: 

The State Park Interpreter I serves as a lead for the sector’s interpretation and education program, including support and coordination of the work of docents, park aides, and volunteers. The State Park Interpreter I create, plans, implements, and evaluates interpretation and education programs, projects, special events, living history programs and other public outreach and community engagement activities. The position collaborates and coordinates with Sector and park unit managers, other State Park staff, volunteers, park partners, schools and community groups, other agencies and organizations in the development and delivery of these projects, programs, events, and activities.

Duties: 

  • Developing and delivering interpretive and education programs relevant to the mission of the two park units involving natural and cultural resources, responsible outdoor recreation use and public safety.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with permanent Parks staff, including rangers and resource specialists, seasonal staff and volunteers in developing and conducting these programs, including guided hikes or tours, campfire programs, school programs, Junior Ranger programs, roving interpretation in high use areas, and other programs.
  • The SPI I will ensure that all interpretive programs are properly designed, scheduled, staffed, and evaluated.
  • The incumbent will develop and lead digital video programs (PORTS, webinars) and other online media to provide high quality interactive interpretation to park visitors and students who do not have the ability to travel to parks.
  • The incumbent assists in developing updates of park unit brochures, maps, interpretive signing, and other printed media, and will develop appropriate audio tours, printed materials and other formats to meet the needs and requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • One year of experience in research and development of historical or natural resource interpretive programs.
  • Equivalent to graduation from college with major work in interpretation, social sciences, natural sciences, communications, or closely related fields. (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for up to two years of the required education on a year- for-year basis.)
