18 Months of additional relevant experience = Associate's degree 

36 Months of additional relevant experience = Bachelor's degree

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education: Associates Degree from a recognized college or university with a major study in a field relevant to fish culture, aquaculture technology, environmental biology and/or wastewater treatment. Each additional year of formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience.

 

Experience:  Three years’ experience as a Fish Culturist, one year of which shall have been at a supervisory level. Each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education.

 

License/Certification: Must possess a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with tank and air brake endorsements or obtain within first year of employment. Must obtain Wastewater Treatment Facility Operator, Grade 1, competency certification within first year of employment.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

1.Requires medium physical work with exposure to the elements, as well as being physically able to perform duties that include continuous strenuous activities such as frequent reaching, bending, lifting, walking, and operating machines or equipment.

 

2.Applicant must agree to controlled substance testing as required by the US Department of Transportation, prior to being offered a position. In addition, position requires controlled substance testing and alcohol testing of the following: random, post-accident, reasonable cause and follow-up. Applicant must agree to sign a previous pre-employment alcohol and drug test statement and sign authorization for the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department to obtain information from previous employer.

 

3.On a case-by-case basis, depending on the facility, may be required to live in Fish and Game Department housing, as a condition of employment, to ensure surveillance to prevent theft and/or vandalism of the hatchery and take corrective action to protect and/or restore the functionality of necessary equipment. If housing is not provided, position will be required to adhere to a schedule to perform similar functioning.
 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Receives general instruction from the Powder Mill Hatchery Superintendent, assigns work to subordinate Fish Culturists and follows up on these assignments to see that they are done properly. Assumes responsibility for all fish cultivation activities related to the operation and maintenance of a regional fish hatchery, in the absence of the Fish Culturist V.

Exercises direct supervision and provides on-the-job training for other Regional Fish Hatchery or Special Purpose facility/treatment plant personnel performing related work. Supervision of employees to include employee development, performance appraisals, discipline and/or corrective action as needed.
 

Oversees, operates, controls and checks fish culture and treatment practices/equipment, and determines changes in processes to assure proper culture and treatment conditions, and recommends necessary adjustment or repairs and reports any inoperable equipment.

 

Collects samples from various hatchery locations, compiles data within the facility and performs routine water, bacteriological and chemical tests and analysis.

 

Regularly performs field site inspections of facility equipment and processes and maintains accurate records of operation.

 

Prepares fish for transportation, this includes calculating proper stocking tank loading densities and assisting with loading.

 

Coordinates daily scheduling of numerous truckloads of trout and salmon with Conservation Officers in both local and distant areas of the State in order to supply the numbers of fish required to meet regional stocking schedules and needs.

 

Prepares work schedules for subordinate Fish Culturists and requisitions supplies and equipment.

 

Trains subordinates in the maintenance and repair of hatchery buildings, grounds and equipment as well as instruction on specialty equipment and reporting. Supervises and participates in grounds maintenance, equipment repair and small construction projects to ensure a clean and neat hatchery.

 

Monitors on-site surveillance system to prevent theft and vandalism, to include security rounds to ensure proper water flows, equipment operation and to control any trespass. Security to include walking and driving hatchery grounds, taking corrective action as needed.
