Curatorial Aide (Requisition 849)

About us: 
The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is the largest provider of hands-on environmental conservation programs for youth and young adults. Program participants protect and restore national parks, marine sanctuaries, cultural landmarks, and community green spaces across the country.

Program Description:
This position will serve within Fort Laramie National Historic Site's Cultural Resources division. The primary responsibility of this position relates to the care, maintenance, preservation, research, and public enjoyment of the park's museum, library, and archival collections, including supporting records, exhibits, and social media. This position will perform housekeeping and preventative maintenance on museum objects and historic structures. This includes the development and utilization of museum handling and cleaning techniques as well as learning basic museum environmental monitoring tasks such as checking pest traps, recording light levels, and recording temperature and humidity. Under supervision and with fellow museum staff, the intern may make storage and housing containers to support museum objects, label storage units, move objects, line shelves and drawers, rehouse paper in archival folders, and install dust covers. In addition, the intern will aid in completion of annual museum inventories as well as creating and entering museum catalog data into the Interior Collections Management System (ICMS) database and library catalog data into the NPS Library Resource Information Service (LIBRIS) database using established National Park Service (NPS) procedures. To promote public awareness and enjoyment of these collections and their national significance, the intern will draw on and use the museum and archival collections to develop and publish educational social media content.

Service Location:
Fort Laramie National Historic Site was a vital post of the westward movement in the 1800s. The site consists of various historic structures and is located on 833 acres. The park is situated in southeastern Wyoming, 3 miles west of the town of Fort Laramie, and 23 miles west of Torrington (the county seat, population 6,500). The small surrounding communities have post office facilities, stores, schools, and churches. In addition to these, Torrington has medical facilities, and a Junior College. The park is also 50 miles west of Scottsbluff, NE; 100 miles north of Cheyenne, WY; and approximately 3 hours from Denver, CO. No government housing is available. Intern will need to find their own housing arrangements.

This position is not AmeriCorps eligible due to high living allowances that exceed maximum AmeriCorps compensation.

Member Qualifications: 

  • Driver's license
  • Personal vehicle is REQUIRED.
  • Willingness to work independently and with a team.
  • Interest or practical experience in Communications, History, Resource & Cultural Management preferred.

Additional: 
Must be eligible to serve as an AmeriCorps Member. This includes:  

  • Being a citizen, permanent resident, or national of the United States.
  • Being at least 18 years or older.
  • Having a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Being willing to undergo National Service Criminal History Check, including criminal background, sex offender and FBI checks.
