About us: 

The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is the largest provider of hands-on environmental conservation programs for youth and adults. Program participants protect and restore national parks, national forests, wildlife refuges, marine sanctuaries, cultural landmarks, community green spaces, and much more across the country. 

 

Position Description:
Please read: This position prefers local candidates already residing in Hawaii and will require that selected individuals have or obtain their own housing on the island of Maui.

 

This internship is an opportunity to work with the Cultural Resources team at Haleakala National Park on Maui, HI. The Cultural Resources intern will work under the supervision of the Cultural Resources Program Manager and their staff, and work alongside another SCA intern.
 
Duties and Responsibilities: 

Conduct condition assessments for archeological sites, historic structures, and cultural landscapes and enter information into NPS Cultural Resources Inventory System; 25%; Assist Archeologist with field visits and surveys; 25%; Inventory, digitize, and rehouse museum collections, including archeology, natural history, art and archives, 25%; Assist Museum Curator with creation of online content, museum tours, museum housekeeping and integrated pest management, and processing of returned rocks; 25%.  

Member Benefits:

  • $450 - weekly living allowance
  • $1,300 - one-time RT travel allowance
  • $730 - monthly housing allowance (for 6 months)
  • $2,375 - reimbursable fund for duty-related travel and/or commuting mileage reimbursement
  • AmeriCorps eligible ($3,447.50 education award)

Member Qualifications:

  • Driver's license required
  • Intern must be able to perform solo hiking/backpacking over rugged, steep volcanic terrain at high elevations (6,000-10,000 ft.) in harsh weather conditions and conduct 3–4-day backcountry trips.
