CDC Violence Prevention Practice and Translation Branch Evaluation and Translation Fellow

CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is available in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.

Research Project: The Division of Violence Prevention (DVP) in the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC) assists national organizations, state and local health agencies, and other partners to develop, implement, evaluate and disseminate effective violence prevention strategies.  DVP’s Prevention Practice and Translation Branch oversees DVP’s programs and provides program evaluation support and training and technical assistance. It also promotes the dissemination of science and practice-based evidence through translation products.

Learning Objectives: The fellow will be engaged in range of learning activities, such as:

  • Participating in trainings and discussions related to best practices in evaluation and translation.
  • Assisting with the development of translation materials for various CDC/DVP and DoD audiences (e.g., recipients, partners) and other practitioners;
  • Collaborating with PPTB and Communications staff to develop various knowledge translation and implementation materials including website content, social media, reports, evaluation briefs, and plain language summaries.
  • Supporting project staff with the planning, implementation and analysis as part of the branch cross-initiative evaluation.
  • Provide support to branch evaluation staff as needed in terms of evaluation planning, data collection, data review, data analysis and evaluation reporting.
  • Collaborating with project staff to track, monitor and report on science and data to action, evaluation and translation activities.
  • Collaborating with project staff to draft, analyze and review translation products including data visualization, research summaries, technical assistance materials, and web-based tools
  • Participating in meetings and collaborate within PPTB, DVP and DoD.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: July 1, 2024. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of Participation: The appointment is full time.

Participant Stipend: Stipend rates may vary based on numerous factors, including opportunity, location, education, and experience. If you are interviewed, you can inquire about the exact stipend rate at that time and if selected, your appointment offer will include the monthly stipend rate.

Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens only.

ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

Qualifications

 

The qualified candidate should have received a master's or doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields (e.g. Public Health). Degree must have been received within the past five years.

Preferred Skills: 

  • Competencies to apply program evaluation concepts and methods to public health programs
  • Training or experience with public health concepts particularly as they apply to health promotion and prevention
  • Training or experience with collecting, extracting and managing data, implementing procedures for evaluation activities, and disseminating evaluation findings
  • Training or experience with qualitative and quantitative methods applied to public health programs
  • Experience with coordinating project activities and timelines
  • Competencies to develop high quality written materials and deliver presentations
  • Competencies to take initiative in getting tasks started and problem-solving to successfully complete project tasks and goals
  • Strong interest in collaborating with a team to set priorities and accomplish project task
  • Experience with violence prevention is preferred

  • Academic Level(s): Postdoctoral or Post-Master's.
