Environmental Health Emergency Specialist

The Center for Preparedness and Response (CPR) is recruiting one Senior Environmental Scientist to join the Planning, Preparedness, and Coordination Section. CPR coordinates statewide public health emergency preparedness and response planning for the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) with a primary focus on preparing Californians for public health emergencies.

This position supports the California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) mission and strategic plan by providing emergency preparedness, environmental exposure assessment and planning expertise to support the health and well-being of California’s diverse people and communities.

The candidate works under the general direction of the Planning, Preparedness, and Coordination Section Chief in the Center for Preparedness and Response (CPR). The Senior Environmental Scientist (Specialist) (SES) coordinates planning efforts for environmental hazards, disasters, or other emergencies including emergency preparedness and response plans.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

  • Knowledge of environmental health hazards and outcomes related to emergency preparedness and response, including radiological threats.
  • Ability to lead multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Knowledge and experience with emergency planning addressing diverse environmental hazards.
  • Ability and experience in developing and providing training to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to reason logically, analyze problems and situations accurately, and take effective action.
  • Willingness to assume complex duties and adapt to changing priorities with a high degree of independence.
  • Ability to make clear and concise decisions, creatively resolve issues, and demonstrate attention to detail.
  • Possess exceptional written and oral communication skills, with the ability to present information and express ideas in a clear, confident, and convincing manner.
