Heavenly/Taylor Creek Visitor Center Interpretive Rangers (USFS, Lake Tahoe)

The Great Basin Institute, in cooperation with the US Forest Service’s Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) is recruiting (2) Heavenly Interpretive Rangers to educate the public and provide a Forest Service presence in South Lake Tahoe. Technicians will be present at Heavenly Mountain Resort Friday, Saturday, and Sunday – conducting mostly Ranger guided hikes for the public. Technicians will be present as front rangers at Taylor Creek Visitor Center, in South Lake Tahoe, on Wednesdays and Thursdays; holiday and weekend work are expected and schedule is subject to change. 

Primary Responsibilities:

• Provides detailed information about recreation opportunities to Forest and ski resort visitors during summer operations. Informs the public about resource management practices, regulations and current conditions.
• Initiates visitor contacts for general Forest Service information and education.
• Conducts “Hike with a Ranger” interpretive tours at Heavenly Mountain Resort every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, while also providing on-the-spot interpretation. 
• Conducts various interpretive programs at Taylor Creek Visitor Center every Wednesday and Thursday, while also providing on-the-spot interpretation.
• Provides adult and children’s activities and programs for the general public.

Contract Timeline:

• 12-week appointment; June 26, 2024 – September 15, 202

• Full time (40 hours/week)

Location:

The Lake Tahoe Basin is located in the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range and spans across 6 counties and 2 states (Placer, Eldorado, Alpine counties in California; Douglas, Washoe, and Carson City counties in Nevada). The forest is managed by the US Forest Service, specifically the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit. The LTBMU includes portions of the Eldorado, Tahoe and Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forests. Opportunities for all-season recreation abound in this region. The Technicians will be based in South Lake Tahoe, CA and will report to the LTBMU Unit Supervisor’s Office.

Compensation and Benefits:

• Wage: $19.80/hour

  Job Qualifications:

(Because the agreement under which this position is being advertised is a Public Lands Corps Youth Assistance Agreement, all applicants must be between the ages of 17 and 30 years old at time of application.)
 

Technical requirements:

• Knowledge of and/or interest in forest resources and management (applicants with prior experience working with the USFS and/or LTBMU encouraged to apply);
• Ability to convey historical and cultural information of the LTBMU to recreational user groups;
• Ability to work and coordinate with other resource professionals, partner organizations, program managers, and the general public;
• Ability to self-motivate and maintain a positive attitude;
• Ability to walk long distances in challenging terrain and harsh and rapidly changing mountainous conditions, and otherwise be in good physical condition;
• Ability to work on a variety of different interpretive and general education Forest Service projects with changing priorities; and
• Possess a valid, state-issued driver’s license and clean driving record.
