Classification Specialist

The Human Resources Division provides guidance, support, and expertise to the CDPH on the recruitment, development, and retention of quality employees in order to fulfill the Department’s mission.

Under the general direction of the SSM II (Supervisory), SPS Chief, the SSM I functions as a nonsupervisory staff specialist performing highly complex and sensitive classification and pay duties, such as analyzing and making recommendations for complex and sensitive classification issues based on the state compensation program, including salary analysis, pay differentials, and special salary adjustments, as well as issues involving collective bargaining and input from the California Department of Human Resources (CalHR) and CalHR’s Office of Labor Relations.

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

  • Ability to support the work and growth of a team and successfully administer human resources programs
  • Strong leadership, coaching, and organizational skills with the ability to work under pressure and handle multiple tasks while addressing changing priorities
  • Strong analytical and communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with a variety of stakeholders
