Job Description and Duties

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW), Fisheries Branch is seeking motivated candidates for a Senior Environmental Scientist (Specialist) position. This position serves as the subject matter expert and coordinator for statewide hatchery compliance with the Clean Water Act (CWA).

As part of Fisheries Branch Fish Production and Distribution Unit (FPD), the incumbent provides coordination, expertise, and consultation for the development of CWA National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits for cold water fish facilities and Regional Water Quality Control Board (RWQCB) Basin Plans. The incumbent will work with a diverse group of stakeholders in developing strategies to monitor hatchery effluent and represent CDFW’s interests with RWQCBs proceedings. The incumbent will provide technical expertise and training to hatchery staff to collect water samples and develop best management practices to comply with NPDES permit requirements. The incumbent will also develop and implement complex study designs aimed at evaluating hatchery effluent impacts on water quality, fish and the aquatic environment and evaluate alternative hatchery practices to promote water quality. General duties include support functions for the FPD as required, including public outreach, statewide coordination, on rare occasions assisting in special hatchery operations and remote brood stock collections.

Working Conditions

Must be able to conduct office work involving use of a computer keyboard for several hours a day, usually sitting, but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time. Must attend meetings and work with staff throughout the State, including travel to CDFW's 21 hatcheries and fish facilities, offsite meetings and occasional out of state travel. Ability to assist with field work, sometimes involving walking through uneven terrain or stream channels in waders, carrying heavy equipment to survey and/or sample locations, travelling on uneven dirt roads requiring 4-wheel drive. Possession of a valid Driver’s License is required.
