Music Teacher

Music/Band Teacher
Portage Northern High School 
Start Date:  August 2024
Salary: per PEA Contract  

 

Instruct students in grades 9-12  in activities designed to promote a flexible music program and provide an environment favorable to learning and personal growth in accordance with each student’s ability. Provide a variety of musical experiences.

Qualifications

  • Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with endorsement for Music (JX or JQ)
  • Bachelor’s degree including courses to meet credential requirements
  • Major or Minor in Music Education
  • Instrumental/Strings requires major concentration in strings and is indicated on college transcript

Preferences

  • Graduate degree in the area of music

 Expectations

  • Teach knowledge and skills in the field of music to high-school school students utilizing the course of study according to the District-approved curriculum. 
  • Provide individual and small-group instruction in order to adapt curriculum to the needs of students with varying abilities and to accommodate a variety of instructional activities. 
  • Provide instruction by which students develop aesthetic concepts and appreciations and the ability to make qualitative judgments about music.
  • Recruit students to receive instruction in playing orchestra instruments.
  • Develop instructional plans and organize class time to provide a balanced program of instruction, demonstration and working time.
  • Provide individual and small-group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of pupils with varying abilities and to accommodate a variety of instructional activities.
  • Instruct students in the proper care and use of instruments and equipment and organize storage areas and control use of materials and instruments to prevent loss and/or abuse.
  • Evaluate each student’s performance and growth in aesthetic understanding and prepare progress reports.
  • Select and requisition instructional materials, books, instruments and maintains inventory reports.
  • Maintain professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and/or in self-selected professional growth activities.
  • Communicate with parents and school counselors on student progress.
  • Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior for an orderly, productive environment.
  • Review, evaluate and make recommendations regarding the instructional program and instructional materials to the administration.
  • Design instructional objectives, teaching schedule and prepare reports as required.
  • Assist in planning and development of student music performances.
  • Participates in faculty and/or District committees and the sponsorship of student activities 
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Attend regularly and consistently.
  • Use multiple teaching strategies to meet the learning needs of different students
  • Work with colleagues to continue to implement, to assess and to meet our school-improvement goals
  • Work with colleagues effectively and cooperatively in the math department to continue to develop and to improve curriculum and performance
  • Work cooperatively and collaboratively with other colleagues, such as special-education teachers and counselors, to serve as part of a team to support at-risk students
  • Work with colleagues effectively and cooperatively in the math department and other departments to continue to build and to support the International Baccalaureate program, as well as to build student support and interest
  • Have experience and willingness to be involved in Activities (advising clubs, coaching debate and coaching Science Olympiad are areas of specific need) or Athletics or both
  • Communicate well with colleagues, students and families
  • Possess strong organization and technology skills
