Air Resources Engineer

Applying electronically via CalCareers is highly recommended. If submitting a hardcopy application (mail/drop-off), please send an email to Essam.Gad@arb.ca.gov to confirm submission.

The California Air Resources Board’s (CARB) mission is to promote and protect public health, welfare, and ecological resources through the effective and efficient reduction of air pollutants while recognizing and considering the effects on the economy of the State. The Air Quality Data Section (AQDS), within the Air Quality Planning and Science Division (AQPSD), is primarily responsible for developing, maintaining, and supporting the State's Aerometric Data Analysis and Management (ADAM) system, also known as ADAM, which is a sophisticated, large database system containing several decades of official, regulatory ambient air quality and meteorological data. The air quality data include all federally-defined National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS) pollutants, a wide-range of toxics, and greenhouse gases. These data are the foundation of many programs at CARB and are used to support activities including State Implementation Plan (SIP) development, monitoring network enhancements and changes, air quality modeling, attainment status demonstrations, exceptional event analyses, and public outreach. The ADAM data are made available online at https://www.arb.ca.gov/adam/index.html.

The AQDS also maintains the Air Quality and Meteorological Information System (AQMIS) and its associated website (https://www.arb.ca.gov/aqmis2/aqmis2.php), which contains a blend of the official data-for-record within ADAM and real-time data received each hour from local, state, and federal agencies operating monitors throughout the State. Current staff support AQMIS by maintaining data feeds from dozens of providers, reviewing data flagged by automated quality control routines, communicating with providers when data transfers problems and data quality issues arise, and responding to data requests and questions from the public, media,

The AQDS seeks an Air Resources Engineer to contribute to development, enhancement, and maintenance of CARB's next generation ADAM system. Over the past few years, the system was migrated from one platform to another for several key air pollutants. The Air Resources Engineer would design, program, and validate new components to handle additional pollutants; support operation and performance of the system; develop tools to improve data access for internal and external data clients; and work with the team to increase the usability of the ADAM website and the types of analytical products provided for use by staff and upper management at CARB, air quality planners, researchers, the public, and an array of other users.
