Middle School Sports Coach
Position Summary:
The Philadelphia School (TPS) Athletics department provides a competitive, athletic experience for students in grades 6-8, inclusive of interscholastic competition with area schools and appropriate, planned, productive practices for athletes of all abilities. Under the supervision of the Athletic Director, the Coach is responsible for overseeing athletes in a competitive and supportive environment, with responsibility of managing enrolled student athletes. The following sports are offered to middle school students each season:
- Fall: Boys Soccer, Girls Soccer, Girls Volleyball
- Winter: Boys Basketball, Girls Basketball
- Spring: Tennis (co-ed), Track & Field (co-ed)
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
- Responsible for the well-being of students enrolled in athletics, while ensuring school’s program standards.
- Plans and implements developmentally appropriate practices for athletes, teaching athletes to develop their skills, the rules of the sport and how to successfully implement strategies and tactics within a competition.
- Oversees the development and progress of each child on the team; differentiates instruction for a range of learning styles and abilities, while collaborating with partnered coaches.
- In partnership with the Athletic Director, communicates with parents as necessary regarding any issues, competitions or practice changes, etc.
- Implements and enforces all health and safety policies set forth by the school.
- Serves to support student engagement and behavior, including any necessary documentation and communication with the Athletic Director.
- Provides athlete support through film and play review during any scheduled team time.
- Respects and helps to maintain program space, materials, and other school facilities.
- Travels with the team to away games and represent TPS with sportsmanship and pride.
- Attending any seasonal tournaments or team celebrations.
Work Hours & Other Duties:
Athletic seasons are about eight weeks, with work hours on Monday, Tuesday, & Thursday (or designated schedule), from 3:00pm-5:00pm, throughout the program’s scheduled calendar months (September - June). Workday may be revised or extended as needed for planning, away games, tournaments, and other team celebrations. This may include weekends and evenings.

Qualifications:
- High School diploma and previous work with children is required.
- Experience playing basketball in high school or a higher level is preferred.
- Highly motivated and enthusiastic about working in an athletic atmosphere.
- A passion for athletic competition and the ability to motivate and inspire student-athletes.
- Demonstrates a genuine interest in children, education, and after school programs.
- Possesses sensitivity, cultural competence, and confidentiality in working with students.
- Demonstrates sensitivity, cultural competence, confidentiality, and professional judgment.
- Communicates appropriately and effectively with students, coworkers, administrators, and other school personnel.
- Overall mobility is essential including sitting, walking, standing, and working under adverse conditions for extended periods of time during the work day.
- The ability to lift 20 lbs to transport supplies and equipment/material is essential to performing the duties of the job.
